Jakarta (ANTARA) -\nProfessor of Research in the Field of Ecology from the National Research\nand Innovation Agency (BRIN), Hunggul Yudono Setio Hadinugroho, has\nrevealed several methods for restoring Watershed Areas (DAS) towards\nregenerative landscapes that can be utilised for societal welfare. In a\nstatement in Jakarta on Wednesday, Hunggul explained that soil and water\nconservation methods can suppress erosion by tens of tonnes per hectare\nper year in horticultural watershed areas. \u201cThe impacts are not only on\nthe environment, but also economically, farmers can save on production\ncosts while maintaining soil fertility,\u201d he said. Hunggul continued that\nvegetative approaches, such as planting high-economic-value crops, have\nproven to reduce land degradation, increase community incomes, and\nstrengthen local food security. \u201cThese results show that conservation\ndoes not have to sacrifice the economy; instead, they can go hand in\nhand,\u201d he stated. Hunggul also mentioned the development of Micro-Hydro\nPower Plants (PLTMH) in watershed areas, which can provide dual\nbenefits: supplying clean energy to rural communities, encouraging\nproductive economic activities, and serving as an incentive for\ncommunities to protect forests and water sources. Furthermore, he has\ndeveloped various data-based technologies and community participation,\nsuch as the simple rain gauge tool ATHUS (Simple Rain Gauge Device) to\nadvanced sensor-based early warning systems ModATHUS (Modified ATHUS)\nfor floods and landslides, as well as real-time environmental quality\ndata platforms based on web and applications. Hunggul emphasised that\nthe benefits of research will be optimal if integrated into policies.\nApproaches such as Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES), citizen\nscience, and quadruple helix collaborations (academia, government,\nprivate sector, community) have proven to strengthen the implementation\nof sustainable watershed management. According to Hunggul, this\nregenerative approach not only maintains conditions but restores and\nimproves ecosystem quality as well as societal welfare. \u201cThis approach\npositions the community as the main actor, with support from adaptive\ntechnology and policies,\u201d he continued.
