The Head of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Arif
Satria, stated that the agency is developing technology to transform
plastic waste into fuel to meet energy needs, specifically for
fishermen. Speaking in Makassar on Monday, Arif introduced the
technology known as ‘Liquid Fuel from Plastic Waste with Advanced
Pyrolysis System for Industrial Scale’, an apparatus designed to process
plastic waste into usable fuel.

‘This plastic waste often has no value; BRIN is transforming this
valueless waste into fuel for fishermen,’ he said during the
International Conference on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) held as
part of the 72nd anniversary celebrations of UMI. Arif explained that if
the conversion of plastic waste into energy can be sustained, the
reliance on diesel will decrease. He expressed optimism that this
technology could lead to energy independence, particularly for the
fishing sector.

‘I believe there are still many other opportunities in the energy
sector that we must promote, ranging from low-tech to high-tech
solutions,’ Prof. Arif noted during the event, which was attended by
researchers from various countries. He added that BRIN possesses
advanced technology regarding waste processing, which is currently being
implemented in Mataram, Lombok.

Arif expressed hope that this international conference would foster
more perspectives regarding the achievement of the Sustainable
Development Goals. He emphasised that current research must provide
solutions to SDG issues, which are targeted for completion by 2030. ‘It
is a global commitment that we need to take steps based on strong
evidence and data, ensuring that our actions possess high
accountability,’ he concluded.
",
