Brimob personnel injure locals<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Several police Mobile Brigade (Brimob) members
\nbeat up on Saturday night three people, whom they believed were
\nlocal hoodlums, in a parking lot in front of Robinson department
\nstore on Jl. Pasar Minggu Raya, South Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The victims, Asril Azis, Hendry and Muslimin, suffered bruises
\non their head and faces.<\/p>\n
The attackers were said to be out of uniform.<\/p>\n
South Jakarta Police chief Sr. Supt. Bambang Widaryatmo
\nconfirmed that the attack was committed by several Brimob
\nmembers, believed to be from the brigade's headquarters in Kelapa
\nDua, East Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Bambang expressed regret that the attack occurred.<\/p>\n
\"They heard that one of their friends, Sgt. Mote, was beaten
\nup by a group of people in the area. Perhaps, they got angry, and
\nthen struck back by attacking the three locals,\" he told The
\nJakarta Post by telephone on Sunday on the possible motive behind
\nthe attack.<\/p>\n
Bambang also hinted that the attack may have been aimed at the
\nwrong people as it is unclear whether the three victims were
\nreally hoodlums.<\/p>\n
\"Two of them were nearby market porters, while the other,
\nMuslimin, just arrived from Karawang, West Java,\" said Bambang.<\/p>\n
He said the three were treated at nearby Pasar Minggu Hospital
\nfor \"light facial bruises\".<\/p>\n
Efriyanto, 28, a local street vendor, said the attackers
\narrived on the scene at around 9 p.m. in private vehicles.<\/p>\n
He said that only one of them wore a T-shirt bearing the
\npolice unit's logo. \"A police officer in the area was silent and
\ndid nothing,\" he told the Post.<\/p>\n
Bambang said the Brimob personnel involved would be processed
\nin line with the law.<\/p>\n
But further investigation by police only seemed to add
\nconfusion to the cause of the incident as a police report, signed
\nby an officer at the Pasar Minggu Police station, said that there
\nhad been no attack by a local hoodlum on a Brimob member.<\/p>\n
