Jakarta, VIVA \u2013 Bripda MS, a member of the Mobile Brigade (Brimob)\nalleged to have beaten a child to death in Tual, Maluku, must face an\nethics tribunal and be tried in criminal court. There is no tolerance\nfor offences committed by members of the Indonesian National Police.<\/p>\n
Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration and\nCorrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra expressed deep concern over the death\nof the victim, AT (14), in the incident. He deeply regretted the event\nthat claimed the life of the madrasah tsanawiyah (Islamic junior\nsecondary school) student.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn principle, in this state governed by law, no one is above the\nlaw. Law enforcement officers must also be punished if they break the\nlaw,\u201d Yusril said in an official statement received in Jakarta on\nSunday, 22 February 2026.<\/p>\n
\u201cPersonally and in my capacity as Coordinating Minister for Law,\nHuman Rights, Immigration and Corrections, who also serves as a member\nof the Police Reform Committee, I am deeply concerned and regret that\nthis incident occurred. I convey my deepest condolences over the passing\nof AT,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Yusril emphasised that MS\u2019s actions had exceeded the bounds of\nhumanity. The police, he stressed, are state apparatus and law enforcers\nobligated to protect every life, whether that of a suspected criminal or\na crime victim.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf a rogue police officer assaults someone, especially a child who\nis not even suspected of wrongdoing, then such an act is truly beyond\nthe bounds of humanity,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He also commended the Maluku Regional Police and National Police\nHeadquarters for, in his view, responding swiftly to the case. He noted\nthat National Police Headquarters\u2019 apology over the incident\ndemonstrated a shift towards a more humble attitude.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, Yusril said the local district police had also taken\nswift action by detaining Bripda MS and examining and declaring him a\nsuspect.<\/p>\n
He further stressed that the Police Reform Acceleration Committee\ncontinues to discuss improvements to the police force\u2019s image,\nencompassing recruitment patterns, education, discipline and\noversight.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Committee is now finalising its final report on the key ideas\nfor police reform to be submitted to the President,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
