Bridge meet interrupted by workers' strike at hotel<\/p>\n
TANGERANG (JP): Some 200 workers of five-star Imperial Century
\nHotel in Lippo Karawaci staged a strike on Monday, paralyzing
\nalmost all of the hotel's activities, including a meeting of
\nPacific-Asia Bridge Federation (PABF).<\/p>\n
"We are demanding full health insurance coverage for workers
\nand our family members, allowance to pay for the loss and
\nbreakage retention of hotel goods and a daily transportation
\nallowance of Rp 7,000 (85 U.S. cents) for all workers," said the
\nchairman of the hotel's workers union, Ronny Kusman.<\/p>\n
"We also demand an annual salary hike and a year-end party."<\/p>\n
The workers also called for the dismissal of general manager
\nDouglas Wallace and financial controller Hendri Elfis for
\ndisrespectful behavior.<\/p>\n
"They always act rudely and tell off the workers," employee
\nOtman told The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n
The strike practically halted all of the hotel's services as
\nmost employees, except the receptionists, joined the strike.<\/p>\n
Many participants in the fourth PABF congress, which opened on
\nFriday, repeatedly complained about the situation.<\/p>\n
The meeting was moved to another hotel.<\/p>\n
The strike ended with negotiations between the workers and
\nhotel management under mediation from an official from the
\nMinistry of Manpower's Tangerang office, Aman Setiawan, and a
\nrepresentative of the Tangerang branch of the All Indonesian
\nWorkers Union Federation (FSPSI), Arsad Ahmad.<\/p>\n
It was decided the hotel management would pay a transportation
\nallowance of Rp 4,000 per day for workers living in Tangerang and
\nRp 6,000 for those residing outside the area, such as Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Based on the deal, the workers will also get an annual salary
\nraise, depending on the length of their service, performance and
\nthe hotel's financial condition.<\/p>\n
It was also agreed there would be 80 percent coverage of
\nhealth insurance for workers and their family members.<\/p>\n
Interviewed separately, evening on-duty manager of the hotel
\nEka Tresna said the strike lasted for several hours from 2 p.m.<\/p>\n
He said there was no foundation to the employees' allegations.<\/p>\n
"The accusation that our top managers are rude is groundless,"
\nhe told the Post over the phone.<\/p>\n
"It's also untrue our service was halted due to the strike."
