        "content": "<p>Bridge collapse defendant freed<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The West Jakarta District Court yesterday found<br>\na Korean man not guilty of causing the collapse of the 500-ton<br>\nGrogol overpass on March 22.<\/p>\n<p>State prosecutor Lonardi Maladi had asked the judges to<br>\nsentence Byung Woo Lee, 38, to one year&apos;s imprisonment, under<br>\nArticle 359 of the Criminal Code, for negligence causing the<br>\ndeaths of three construction workers, and injuring five others.<\/p>\n<p>Byung was the construction superintendent.<\/p>\n<p>Presiding judge M. Suleman said that none of the 23 witnesses<br>\ncalled had been able to provide any evidence that Byung had<br>\nordered workers to remove the crossbars or the overpass ramp.<\/p>\n<p>The defendant did not deserve to be punished, he said.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The charges against him could not be proved during the<br>\ntrial,&quot; Suleman said.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement of the verdict was postponed twice because<br>\nthe defendant had been sick.<\/p>\n<p>Byung kept his head down throughout the three-hour session.<\/p>\n<p>He cried when the prosecutor read the sentence request, but<br>\nsmiled and nodded when the not guilty verdict was translated.<\/p>\n<p>When the presiding judge asked him if he wanted to say<br>\nanything, Byung said that he sent his condolences to the victims&apos;<br>\nfamilies, and thanked the judges for letting him go free.
