JEMBER, East Java: Head of Jember regency's Education Office,
\nHM Hasi, said that "special referrals" and "bribery" had emerged
\nas parents become increasingly desperate to ensure that their
\nchildren enter desired schools in the upcoming school year.<\/p>\n
"I'm surprised that some people still do such things (bribery
\nand referrals). Such things are no longer acceptable since
\neverything is done by computer," Dasi said on Friday.<\/p>\n
He said that the referral memos came from many people,
\nincluding from officials and public figures.<\/p>\n
He also admitted there were some parents who came to him,
\nasking him to ensure that their children pass the admittance
\ntests to enter senior or junior high schools.<\/p>\n
"All I can say to them is, tell their children to study hard

CIREBON, West Java: A suspect believed responsible for a bomb
\nhoax in Cirebon city was arrested by the police on Friday.<\/p>\n
According to chief of Cirebon Police, Adj. Sr. Comr. Wisnu,
\nthe suspect, 22-year-old Dedi Hartono, was arrested in his house
\nafter midnight. "We arrested the suspect, known to be a local
\npreacher, when he was having dinner. We made the arrest after
\ntracking him via the cell phone that he used to contact Elshinta
\nradio station in Jakarta," Wisnu said.<\/p>\n
He said the suspect sent an SMS to the radio's hotline number
\n0811806543, saying a bomb exploded outside the Asia Discotheque
\nand killed several civilians on Thursday afternoon. The radio
\nstation editors called the suspect back so he could tell the
\nstory live.<\/p>\n
The false information, he said, caused panic among police
\nofficials in Jakarta as well as Cirebon residents.<\/p>\n
"Based on the information we panicked and directly checked the
\nlocations and hospitals, but the information was proven to be a
\nlie," Wisnu said.<\/p>\n
While being questioned, Dedi said he sent the message for fun.
\n"I was doing it for fun, I didn't mean to terrorize Cirebon

\nhave left hundreds of houses in Ransiki district, Manokwari
\nregency in West Irian Jaya province, inundated, killed one
\nresident and wiped out two bridges.<\/p>\n
Head of the Manokwari Social Services and People's Empowerment
\nOffice, Sergius Muabuay, said on Friday that apart from the
\nfloods, landslides also took place in four villages, Nuhuney,
\nWamce, Kamasan and Abreso.<\/p>\n
"Residents suffering from the disasters are now taking shelter
\nin safe areas," Sergius said, adding that the worst damage was at
\na state elementary school in Nuhuney.<\/p>\n
He said a team from the Manokwari regental administration has

BANDUNG: In efforts to deal with traffic problems, the Bandung
\nadministration will soon get 20 new bus lanes, an official said.<\/p>\n
Bandung Mayor Dada Rosada said the bus lanes will be set up
\nusing a grant from the Ministry of Transportation, with the first
\nbusline planned for the southern outer ring road serving the
\nCiburi-Cibeureum route.<\/p>\n
"We're using the outer ring road because the roads in the city
\ncenter are too small for bus lanes," Dada said after signing a
\nMoU for the bus lane project on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Director General of Land Transportation, Iskandar Abu Bakar,
\nsaid the bus lanes would be different from Jakarta's TransJakarta
\nbusway as they would not have exclusive bus lanes.<\/p>\n
He said the earlier monorail plan was still out of reach due
\nto the high costs, which were estimated to reach around US$400
