BRI to try Islamic principles<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: State Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI) is planning to open
\nprofit-and-loss-sharing branches based on Islamic principles in
\nseveral parts of the country early next year, a report said on
\nThursday.<\/p>\n
"God willing, early in 2002 we will open two of these branches
\nin Jakarta and Serang in Banten province as pilot projects," the
\nbank's president director, Rudjito, announced.<\/p>\n
BRI will also open six other profit-and-loss-sharing branches
\nin Java next year, he added.<\/p>\n
The bank is now making preparations for the opening of the
\nbranches, which involves providing education and training courses
\nfor its personnel, he said.<\/p>\n
"The development of such banks in Indonesia has good
\nprospects, as Muslims comprise the majority group in the country.
\nThey have been longing for banks to operate on a profit-and-loss-
\nsharing basis," he said.<\/p>\n
The profit-and-loss-sharing principle is the best solution to
\nthe country's sluggish banking industry during the current crisis
\nbecause it does not suffer negative spread, he said.<\/p>\n
"However, the public's poor knowledge of the activities of
\nsuch banks and the lack of regulations on them still pose an
