RI to spend $308m on more Sukhois<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Air Force chief Marshal Chappy Hakim said on
\nWednesday the country would need US$308 million to buy eight more
\nRussian jet fighter Sukhois.<\/p>\n
Speaking to visiting members of House of Representatives
\nCommission I for defense and political affairs, Chappy said the
\narrival of the new warplanes would enable the country to have a
\nsquadron of sophisticated jet fighters, following the purchase of
\nfour Sukhois earlier this year.<\/p>\n
He said the Air Force expected the purchase could materialize
\nin the next one or two years.<\/p>\n
The Air Force has proposed the purchase of two Sukhoi SU-30
\nMKs at a price of $96 million and six Sukhoi SU-27SKs, which cost
\na total of $212 million.<\/p>\n
"The squadron will replace the two squadrons of old, U.S.-made
\nA-4 Skyhawks, which have entered their rundown period," he said.<\/p>\n
Chairman of House Commission I Ibrahim Ambong said the
\nlawmakers would stand behind the Air Force in pressing the
\ngovernment to buy more Sukhois to improve the country's defense
\nsystem.<\/p>\n
"Buying the warplanes is the price we have to pay if we want

BATAM, Riau: The National Resilience Institute (Lemhanas) has
\nsend a team to study the perception of nationhood among
\nbureaucrats, local public officials and nongovernmental
\norganization activists in selected provinces.<\/p>\n
The research is aimed at finding out about the motivation of
\npeople in some regions to separate from the Unitary Republic of
\nIndonesia. Batam, East Java, West Nusa Tenggara and Central
\nSulawesi have been chosen for the study, which will be carried
\nout via interviews.<\/p>\n
"We are wondering how far people in the areas understand the
\nconcept of nationhood," Lemhannas director of evaluation and
\nvalidation Sumarman said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
The research was inspired by the growing trend of people in
\ncertain provinces like Aceh and Papua to break away from the
\ncountry, and the recurring sectarian violence that might affect
\nnational integrity.<\/p>\n
The results of the research will be submitted to the President
