Retrial for jailed Anwar urged<\/p>\n
MALAYSIA: Two opposition parties on Friday pressed newly
\ninstalled Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to order a retrial
\nfor jailed former deputy premier Anwar Ibrahim, a victim of
\npolitical conspiracy.<\/p>\n
Islamic Party (PAS), Malaysia's largest opposition party and
\nAnwar's People's Justice Party (Keadilan) submitted a three-page
\nmemorandum to Badawi with a 19-point demand.<\/p>\n
\"Anwar deserves a retrial. He is a victim of political
\nconspiracy. Anwar should be freed on bail after almost five years
\nin jail,\" Mohamad Ezam Mohamad Nor, Keadilan's youth chief told
\nAFP.<\/p>\n
\"Anwar is not a threat to the government. His release will
\nsilence international criticism and add legitimacy to Badawi's
\nleadership.\"<\/p>\n
Anwar, 56, once seen as heir to Mahathir, claims he was sacked
\nand later charged with sodomy and corruption to prevent a
\npolitical challenge to former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad.
