Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps has launched missile strikes against a US military base in response to recent American actions, escalating tensions between the two nations. The US had previously shot down Iranian drones and attacked a ground control station in Bandar Abbas, which Iran called a breach of their ceasefire agreement. Despite indications of nearing a peace deal, neither side shows willingness to compromise, with mutual accusations of unreasonable demands.

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps
(IRGC) of Iran stated it targeted a US airbase in the region on Thursday
local time. This is a response to a new attack, marking the second armed
clash between the two rival nations this week.

The latest confrontation began with reports of explosions shortly
after midnight in the southern Iranian port city of Bandar Abbas, which
houses a naval base.

Previously, a US official told media that American forces shot down
four Iranian kamikaze drones “posing a threat around the Strait of
Hormuz” and also attacked a ground control station in Bandar Abbas “that
would have launched a fifth drone”. The official described the actions
as “measured, purely defensive, and intended to preserve the
ceasefire”.

It was also reported that several missiles and drones were
intercepted over Kuwait. Open-source analysts suggested online that the
projectiles may have been heading towards Ali Al Salem Air Base near the
Kuwait-Iraq border.

The IRGC later released a statement saying they targeted the US base
involved in the previous attack near Bandar Abbas Airport. “The
aggressor bears full responsibility for the consequences,” the
statement, published by RT on Friday, 29 May 2026, said.

Hostilities followed the US’s “self-defence” strikes against Iranian
ships and naval sites in southern Hormozgan province on Monday. Tehran
condemned the attacks as a serious breach of the ceasefire agreed on 8
April.

Although US officials indicated this week that both sides were close
to an initial peace agreement, there are no signs that Washington or
Tehran are willing to compromise. Both countries accuse each other of
setting unacceptable conditions.
",
