Indonesia is hosting the 19th International Conference of the Asian\nAssociation for Lexicography (AsiaLex 2026), to be held on 9\u201311\nSeptember 2026 in Yogyakarta. This international conference is organised\nby the Language Development and Cultivation Agency (Badan Bahasa) of the\nMinistry of Primary and Secondary Education of the Republic of\nIndonesia, in cooperation with the Asian Association for Lexicography\n(ASIALEX).<\/p>\n
This appointment marks the second time for Badan Bahasa, having\npreviously been selected to host the AsiaLex Conference in 2020.\nHowever, due to the pandemic, the conference originally planned for\nYogyakarta was postponed and converted into an online conference held on\n12\u201314 June 2021.<\/p>\n
AsiaLex was founded at the conference Dictionaries in Asia: Research\nand Pedagogical Implications at the Hong Kong University of Science and\nTechnology on 27\u201329 March 1997. The organisation aims to foster\nscholarly and professional activities in the field of lexicography\nthrough the exchange of information and ideas via meetings, publications\nand other means. After being held biennially until 2015, AsiaLex has\nbeen held annually since 2016, with the conference process transforming\nfrom print to electronic formats.<\/p>\n
For the 2026 edition, AsiaLex carries the theme \u2018Lexicography:\nMultidisciplinary Approaches and Collaboration\u2019. The theme was chosen to\ndemonstrate that modern-day dictionary compilation no longer stands\nalone, but intersects with technology, computer science, artificial\nintelligence, psychology and sociology, whilst also showcasing the\nimportant role of lexicography beyond the field of linguistics.<\/p>\n
In her report, the Coordinator of the AsiaLex 2026 Conference, who\nalso serves as Executive Editor-in-Chief of the Great Dictionary of the\nIndonesian Language (KBBI), Dewi Puspita, stated: \u2018We chose this theme\nbecause in the modern era, dictionary-making no longer stands alone; it\naims to demonstrate the influence and importance of lexicography for\nother scholarly fields, not only for linguistics.\u2019<\/p>\n
Over three days, 64 papers will be presented in parallel sessions\nspread across four rooms, both offline and online. Dewi expressed hope\nthat through the discussions, all participants would gain new findings\nthat challenge existing theories and methods, as well as build\nsustainable professional collaborations.<\/p>\n
A number of leading lexicography experts are scheduled to appear as\nkeynote speakers, including the Editor-in-Chief of the KBBI, Dr Dora\nAmalia; Prof.\u00a0Kilim Nam of Yonsei University (South Korea); and\nProf.\u00a0Pedro A. Fuertes-Olivera of the University of Valladolid\n(Spain).<\/p>\n
In addition to the keynote speakers, the event is attended by 90\nparticipants, with 64 papers presented across 17 parallel sessions. The\npapers cover topics including the development, compilation and use of\nspecialised dictionaries; the intersection of lexicography with other\nfields of study; dictionary compilation assisted by artificial\nintelligence; natural language processing; digital lexicography; as well\nas dictionaries in bilingual or multilingual contexts, translation\nstudies, and cross-linguistic resources.<\/p>\n
The AsiaLex Conference was originally planned to take place entirely\noffline, but the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau caused participants\u2019\nflights to Indonesia to be delayed or cancelled, prompting organisers to\nswiftly adapt the event into a hybrid format to accommodate those unable\nto attend in person in Yogyakarta.<\/p>\n
In her opening remarks, the President of AsiaLex, Ai Inoue of the\nUniversity of Tokyo, expressed hope that the conference would provide\nample opportunities for stimulating discussions, fruitful exchanges of\nideas, and the forging of new connections.<\/p>\n
\u2018I also hope that, whether joining offline or online, we can all\nshare ideas and engage in discussions with mutual respect for one\nanother,\u2019 said Ai Inoue.<\/p>\n
The future of Indonesian lexicography lies in the willingness to\ncollaborate and innovate.
