        "content": "<p>Brawl between STPDN students injures 11<\/p>\n<p>Yuli Tri Suwarni, The Jakarta Post, Bandung<\/p>\n<p>Eleven youths were injured in a lunchtime brawl that erupted<br>\namong Public Administration Institute (STPDN) students in<br>\nSumedang, West Java, on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>A witness said the fight was sparked by a dispute between a<br>\nsecond-year student, identified as Simon of Papua, and a fourth-<br>\nyear senior Hasyim Siregar of North Sumatra earlier that morning.<\/p>\n<p>\"Simon was caught in the act smuggling in a bottle of alcohol<br>\nduring a class. Hasyim warned him to dispose of the bottle and<br>\nSimon punched Hasyim,\" the witness, who would not give his name,<br>\ntold The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n<p>News of the incident spread and more than 1,000 fourth-year<br>\nstudents jeered Simon as he and other juniors, numbering about<br>\n3,000, began lunch in the campus dining room.<\/p>\n<p>A food fight denegrated into a full-scale brawl as seniors<br>\nbegan throwing plates and glasses at the juniors.<\/p>\n<p>The panicked juniors smashed the dining room's glass front<br>\ndoors as they tried to leave building.<\/p>\n<p>Dozens of lecturers intervened but could not could not stop<br>\nthe fight. They called the Jatinangor Police who broke up the<br>\nmelee.<\/p>\n<p>Eleven students were treated at the campus for injuries<br>\nranging from minor cuts and bruises to more serious wounds,<br>\nSumedang Police Chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Yoyok Subagyo told the Post<br>\nafter visiting the clinic.<\/p>\n<p>Officers had moved all the fourth-year students off of the<br>\ncampus to prevent further clashes and questioned dozens of<br>\nstudents from various grades involved in the incident, Yoyok<br>\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p>Violence is not new to STPDN, a state technical college that<br>\nproduces the country's bureaucrats. The institute, which is<br>\nnotorious for imposing military-style discipline on its students,<br>\nmade the headlines in 2003 when SCTV television channel broadcast<br>\nvideo footage of a junior student, Wahyu Hidayat, who was beaten<br>\nto death by seniors.<\/p>\n<p>The Sumedang District Court sentenced 10 STPDN students to<br>\nbetween seven and 10 months' jail for the accidental killing of<br>\nWahyu.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in 2000, a junior STPDN student Erie Rakhman also died<br>\nfrom beatings by his seniors. Seven students involved in that<br>\nviolence were also jailed.<\/p>\n<p>After the 2003 killing, the government decided to move the<br>\ninstitute to Jakarta, where it would share facilities with the<br>\nInstitute of Administrative Sciences.<\/p>\n<p>However, the merger will only occur after the remaining<br>\nstudents in the Sumedang campus graduate.<\/p>",
