The Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) has reaffirmed its position as\na special region that excels not only in education and culture but also\npossesses strong economic resilience. This advantage is a key reason for\nStatistics Indonesia (BPS) to comprehensively map the role of various\neconomic sectors in DIY through the implementation of the 2026 Economic\nCensus (SE2026).<\/p>\n
Deputy Head of BPS RI, Sonny Harry Budiomo Harmadi, officially\nlaunched the SE2026 at Teras Malioboro 1, Yogyakarta, on Thursday\n(18\/6). He explained that the census results will be able to more\naccurately measure the contribution of the education sector to DIY\u2019s\neconomy.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf we look at it, education plays an extraordinary role in building\nthe nation, both in developing people and the economy. So, after the\ncensus is completed, we will be able to calculate the contribution of\nthe education sector to the economy in DIY,\u201d Sonny explained.<\/p>\n
DIY is known as a \u2018City of Students\u2019, a destination for students from\nall over Indonesia. The presence of various universities and educational\ninstitutions not only produces high-quality human resources but also\ncreates diverse economic activities that support community life. This\nexcellence is reflected in DIY\u2019s Human Development Index (IPM)\nachievement, which ranks second highest in Indonesia, demonstrating that\neducation is a primary foundation of regional development.<\/p>\n
Through SE2026, BPS will obtain a more complete picture of the\nlinkages between the education sector and various economic activities,\nranging from trade, services, housing, and transportation to other\nsupporting sectors. Besides being known as a City of Students, DIY is\nalso a centre of culture with a wealth of noble cultural heritage. In\n2024, DIY recorded the highest Cultural Development Index (IPK) in\nIndonesia with a score of 71.04.<\/p>\n
The launch of SE2026 in Yogyakarta also highlighted local cultural\nvalues. The peak of the event was marked by the release of a jemparing,\nor traditional arrow, an Indonesian intangible cultural heritage, as a\nsymbol of the commencement of SE2026 in DIY.<\/p>\n
Amidst various global economic challenges, DIY managed to record\neconomic growth of 5.49 percent throughout 2025, the highest on Java\nIsland. This achievement demonstrates the resilience of the regional\neconomy, supported by various sectors including education, tourism,\nculture, trade, and MSMEs.<\/p>\n
Through SE2026, BPS will present complete, up-to-date, and integrated\neconomic data as a basis for more targeted economic development\nplanning. More than 600,000 business actors will be recorded. To support\nthe census implementation in DIY, BPS has deployed 4,082 field officers\nwho will record approximately 606,000 business actors.<\/p>\n
The launch of SE2026 at Teras Malioboro 1 was chosen because the area\nis one of the centres for MSMEs, shopping tourism, and modern culinary\nactivities, symbolising the economic dynamism of Yogyakarta\u2019s community.\nDuring the event, MSME actors were also involved through the\ndistribution of shopping vouchers to participants.<\/p>\n
SE2026 introduces several innovations compared to previous economic\ncensuses. In addition to covering all economic sectors, the data\ncollection will be conducted door-to-door to households and business\nactors, resulting in a more comprehensive economic picture. BPS is also\nutilising digital technology and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to support\nthe data collection process, assisting officers in improving data\nquality while minimising input errors.<\/p>\n
The success of SE2026 heavily depends on the active participation of\nthe community and business actors. For this reason, Sonny once again\ninvited the public to remember the simple slogan \u201cTIR\u201d: Terima petugas\nSE2026 (Accept the SE2026 officer), Isi data dengan benar (Fill in the\ndata correctly), and Rahasia terjaga (Secrecy is maintained). He also\nreminded all census officers to ensure no families or businesses are\nmissed and to maintain the quality of the data collected.<\/p>\n
Deputy Governor of DIY, Kanjeng Gusti Pangeran Adipati Aryo Paku Alam\nX (KGPAA Paku Alam X), invited the entire Yogyakarta community to\nactively participate and provide accurate data. According to him, the\nresults of SE2026 will serve as an important foundation in formulating\nregional economic development policies, particularly in encouraging MSME\ngrowth, investment, and improving community welfare.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe need a complete portrait of our business dynamics. This data will\nbe the basis for increasing MSME growth, investment, and ensuring the\nbenefits are felt more widely by all the people,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The regional government is one of the parties that will benefit\ngreatly from the SE2026 results. The data produced will assist the\ngovernment in formulating evidence-based policies without having to\nspend its own budget through the regional budget (APBD) for data\ncollection. The prerequisite, of course, is full support during the\nimplementation of SE2026.<\/p>\n
With its characteristics as a City of Students, a national cultural\ncentre, and the region with the highest economic growth on Java Island,\nDIY is one of the strategic areas in the implementation of the 2026\nEconomic Census.
