        "content": "<p>The Bali Central Statistics Agency (BPS) has assured the public that\ndata collected for the 2026 Economic Census (SE) is not intended to\ninfluence taxation. \u201cWe understand the public\u2019s concerns regarding the\nimplementation of the 2026 Economic Census, but we need to emphasise\nthat the purpose of the SE is not for tax assessment or supervision,\u201d\nsaid Head of BPS Bali Agus Gede Hendrayana Hermawan in Denpasar on\nWednesday. This statement was made in response to widespread concern on\nsocial media that the government is spying on the public\u2019s economy\nthrough data collected by SE 2026, in order to subsequently raise taxes\nbecause their businesses are deemed to be doing well today. According to\nhim, the data collected by BPS Bali is used solely for statistical\npurposes and development planning. Moreover, the 2026 Economic Census is\nnot a new activity; it is the fifth iteration, conducted every 10 years\nsince 1986. The practice is also identical to economic censuses in other\ncountries, so BPS Bali is asking the public not to worry. \u201cThe 2026\nEconomic Census is a comprehensive data collection covering all sectors\nand business scales without exception. The resulting data forms a\ncrucial foundation for understanding the economic structure, monitoring\nbusiness developments, and supporting the formulation of data-based\ndevelopment policies,\u201d he stated. Rather than affecting the taxes billed\nby the state, the answers provided by the public will instead be used by\nthe government to capture a more complete picture of the number,\ncharacteristics, distribution, and structure of businesses in each\nregion. With this data, the government can compile various economic\nindicators, including Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP), which is\nused to measure regional economic performance and growth. \u201cThe more\ncomplete and accurate the business data obtained through the Economic\nCensus, the better the quality of the economic statistics produced,\nincluding GRDP. Consequently, local governments can formulate more\ntargeted development policies, identify leading sectors, encourage\ninvestment, create jobs, and improve public welfare,\u201d he said. For\nbusiness actors, the processed results of this census are also believed\nto be useful for strengthening business planning, understanding market\nstructure and potential, and identifying business development\nopportunities. \u201cThus, the Economic Census is not only a tool for\ndevelopment planning but also supports the growth and competitiveness of\nthe business world, especially in Bali,\u201d said Agus Gede. Beyond this,\nBPS Bali guarantees the confidentiality of data provided by the public\nto census officers, as respondent data protection is ensured by two\nlayers of regulation: Law Number 16 of 1997 and Law Number 27 of 2022.\n\u201cTherefore, we invite all residents and business actors in Bali to\nparticipate in the 2026 Economic Census by welcoming census officers,\nfilling in data correctly, and keeping data confidential, as a joint\neffort to realise accurate and high-quality economic data,\u201d he said.<\/p>",
