        "content": "<p>Jakarta \u2014 The Indonesian Medicines and Food Regulatory Authority\n(BPOM) stated it is conducting an investigation into alleged free sales\nof tramadol at retail outlets, and will take firm action against the\nmisuse of the drug.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTramadol falls under certain medicines according to BPOM Regulation\nNumber 21,\u201d said BPOM head Taruna Ikrar in Jakarta on Tuesday. \u201cThese\nare powerful medicines commonly used, such as painkillers and fatigue\nrelievers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He explained that tramadol functions as an anti-inflammatory and\nanalgesic, but is frequently abused. \u201cWe classify these as controlled\nmedicines. These drugs can cause several effects \u2014 firstly, a \u2018high\u2019\nwhen combined with certain other substances, and can produce effects\nsimilar to ecstasy, and so on,\u201d said Taruna.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that public reports regarding tramadol being sold freely in\ncommunities have become a priority, and are currently being\ninvestigated. \u201cWe expect to take enforcement action shortly,\u201d he\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p>A video circulating on social media showed several shops allegedly\nselling tramadol in the Kalisari and Pekayon areas of Pasar Rebo, East\nJakarta, being pelted with firecrackers by residents. The video\nrecorder, identified as Akbar, admitted on Monday (9 March) to\nparticipating in the incident, stating the action was taken because\nprevious public reports to police had allegedly gone unaddressed.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Chair of Commission III of Indonesia\u2019s House of\nRepresentatives Ahmad Sahroni called on police to follow up on community\nfindings regarding tramadol sales outlets in East Jakarta. According to\nSahroni, the spread of tramadol in communities poses serious risks to\npublic health and economy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI urge the police to move faster in addressing reports regarding\ntramadol sales, given its potential to cause severe addiction for users.\nThere should be no inaction \u2014 reports should be acted upon immediately,\u201d\nSahroni said in an official press statement released in Jakarta on\nTuesday.<\/p>",
