        "content": "<p>Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Agency of Drug and Food Control\n(BPOM) is working to strengthen collaboration between universities, the\nbusiness world, and the government (ABG) regarding Advanced Therapy\nMedicinal Products (ATMP) by delivering material during a guest lecture\nat Indonesia International Institute for Life Sciences (i3L\nUniversity).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBPOM\u2019s main target is to assist the wider public in the availability\nof innovative medicines. However, on the other hand, it will also impact\nthe industries. As a regulator, our intention is to help and serve, not\nto complicate the licensing process,\u201d stated BPOM Head Taruna Ikrar.<\/p>\n<p>He said in Jakarta on Wednesday that synergistic collaboration can\nenhance optimal healthcare services for the public. This approach\nthrough such forums is considered important to ensure that innovations\nin gene, cell, and biotechnology-based therapies can develop more\nquickly. Yet, they must remain within strict corridors of safety,\nefficacy, and quality.<\/p>\n<p>He explained that his agency applies an academia-business-government\n(ABG) collaboration model to optimise the process from research to\ncommercialisation of health innovations. In this concept, academics play\na role in developing basic and applied research as well as preparing\nexpert personnel.<\/p>\n<p>He highlighted global developments showing significant acceleration\nin biology-based therapies. Thousands of gene therapy, cell therapy, and\nribonucleic acid (RNA) products are currently being developed in various\ncountries. In fact, some have already been used for patients.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese developments are seen to have a direct impact on society\nbecause they open up opportunities for more personal and precise\ntreatments, especially for chronic diseases, cancer, and genetic\ndisorders,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>In supporting such innovations, the agency\u2019s role is not only as a\nsupervisor but also as a facilitator. Supervision, he said, is carried\nout comprehensively from the research stage, non-clinical and clinical\ntrials, to post-production monitoring. With this approach, the public is\nexpected to gain access to innovative therapies that are not only modern\nbut also guaranteed in terms of safety and quality.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, ATMP development still faces several challenges, such\nas production complexity, the need for long-term clinical data, and\nsafety aspects that must be continuously monitored. This demands ongoing\nreadiness from all stakeholders, both in terms of regulation,\ninfrastructure, and human resources.<\/p>\n<p>BPOM also emphasises the importance of accelerating the downstreaming\nof university research results so that they can truly be utilised by the\npublic. Through ABG collaboration, research outcomes are expected not to\nstop at the laboratory stage but to be developed into real products\navailable in healthcare services.<\/p>",
