        "content": "<p>The Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) has stated that globally\ninterconnected, high-quality laboratories and continuous innovation are\ncrucial for tackling health challenges and overseeing food and drugs in\nthe current era, such as microplastics. BPOM Head Taruna Ikrar said in\nJakarta on Monday that microplastics, and even nanoplastics, have an\nimpact on the environment. He added that currently, plastic use is\nmassive, but it is not regulated or prepared in such a way, ultimately\nleading to health problems. Citing a study published in The New England\nJournal of Medicine, he noted that atherosclerosis\u2014the narrowing or\nhardening of arteries due to plaque buildup on blood vessel walls\u2014was\nfound to be triggered by microplastics. \u201cThe problem is how these\nmicroplastics can enter our vascular system. We do not know at present,\nbut it may be because nanoparticles from these microplastics enter the\nblood, then get stuck and injure the endothelial system in our vascular\nsystem,\u201d he said at \u2018The Laboratory Future: Sustainability in Innovation\nand Operations\u2019 event. He therefore stated that innovation, good\nlaboratory quality, and intercontinental connections are important to\nadvance supervision and scientific development, ensuring the government\ncan protect the public. \u201cNot to mention the issue of drugs, especially\nnarcotic particles,\u201d he said. In many incidents in Indonesia, he noted,\nthere are a great many illegal drugs. To combat this, he said, good\nlaboratories are needed to develop drug safety parameters. \u201cNot just in\nIndonesia. On any continent, we need specific tools, specific\nfacilities, and specific laboratories to test many things quickly,\u201d\nTaruna said.
