Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - The National Agency of Drug and Food\nControl (BPOM) has discovered 24 natural or herbal medicine products\nthat are illegal and hazardous due to containing chemical drug\nsubstances (BKO). This finding comes from BPOM\u2019s monitoring efforts\nduring the January-February 2026 period.<\/p>\n

BPOM Head Taruna Ikrar emphasised that the agency will take firm\naction against businesses engaging in such practices. These products are\nknown to be mixed with active drug substances such as sildenafil,\nparacetamol, and dexamethasone, which should not be present in natural\ningredient medicines.<\/p>\n

\u201cBPOM will continue to crack down firmly on businesses that\ndeliberately add chemical drugs to natural medicine products. Such\npractices cannot be tolerated as they endanger public health,\u201d said\nTaruna Ikrar in his statement quoted on Tuesday (6\/4\/2026).<\/p>\n

He stressed that all these products are illegal, dangerous, and\nprohibited from circulating in Indonesia. Businesses found violating the\nrules may be prosecuted under Law No.\u00a017 of 2023 on Health, facing\nimprisonment of up to 12 years and\/or a maximum fine of Rp5 billion.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe public is urged to be more cautious in selecting herbal products\nand to always ensure they have BPOM circulation permits before\nconsumption,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The illegal use of chemical drugs in herbal products carries high\nrisks, ranging from unstable blood pressure, heart attacks, liver and\nkidney damage, to death. BPOM also reminds that these products are often\nmarketed with attractive claims such as male stamina boosters, slimming\naids, and pain relievers, despite containing prescription drugs.<\/p>\n
