The Head of the Indonesian Food and Drug Authority (BPOM), Taruna\nIkrar, has stated that Indonesia will soon establish an agreement with\nChina to regulate matters concerning medicines and food safety.<\/p>\n
\u201cYesterday\u2019s meeting with the National Medical Product Administration\n(NMPA), or China\u2019s BPOM, went well, ensuring that the Memorandum of\nUnderstanding (MoU) between BPOM Indonesia and the NMPA will be ratified\nsoon. The draft is complete, and we will sign it shortly,\u201d Taruna Ikrar\ntold ANTARA in Beijing on Sunday.<\/p>\n
The MoU between BPOM and the NMPA previously expired in June 2024.\nBPOM is currently pushing for an updated cooperation with a broader\nscope, including regulations for medicines, vaccines, biological\nproducts, pharmaceutical raw materials, natural medicines, cosmetics,\nand digital regulatory technology.<\/p>\n
\u201cGod willing, we will present this during the APEC high-level meeting\nbetween President Prabowo and President Xi,\u201d Ikrar said.<\/p>\n
The contents of the MoU between BPOM and the NMPA include\nregulations, investment, safety, quality, and efficacy, as well as more\nspecific provisions regarding technology transfer.<\/p>\n
\u201cCertain technologies, such as vaccine technology specifically from\nChina, will invest in Indonesia. On the other hand, Indonesia possesses\nexperts particularly related to drug management certification because\nBPOM is WHO-listed, meaning our manufacturing standards are already very\nhigh,\u201d Ikrar explained.<\/p>\n
As a WHO-Listed Authority (WLA), BPOM strengthens Indonesia\u2019s\nposition within the global regulatory system. Through the \u2018reliance\u2019\nmechanism, BPOM can utilise the assessment results of established\nregulators as a reference, while still conducting its own assessment\nprocess, though this does not constitute direct recognition.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf implemented, it is hoped that pharmaceutical industries in China\ncan obtain Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) certificates from\nIndonesia, or certificates for good drug or food manufacturing\npractices, as China has not yet achieved this (WHO certification),\u201d\nIkrar noted.<\/p>\n
In addition to meeting with the NMPA, Ikrar also served as a speaker\nat the \u2018International Biomedical Industry Innovation Conference Beijing\nForum\u2019 organised by Tsinghua University. He also presented material for\nthe \u2018AI + New Medical Technology Conference\u2019 session.<\/p>\n
\u201cI presented the concept of artificial intelligence applications in\nthe implementation of what we call Advanced Therapeutic Medicinal\nProducts (ATMP) and their various derivatives,\u201d Ikrar added. ATMPs are\nmedical products containing active substances derived from cells or\ntissues used for the treatment, prevention, or diagnosis of diseases,\nwhich can be classified into gene therapy, cell therapy, and\ntissue-engineered products such as stem cells, secretomes, and organ\ntissue engineering.<\/p>\n
\u201cTsinghua University is one of the best universities in the world. I\nhope that technology can be developed from there for Indonesia, and\nthere will be exchanges for human resource development,\u201d Ikrar said.<\/p>\n
Another agenda for Ikrar and the BPOM team included visiting several\nindustries.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor example, several pharmaceutical, food, and capsule development\nindustries.
