        "content": "<p>BP West Java operates as usual<\/p>\n<p>The Jakarta Post, Jakarta<\/p>\n<p>Energy firm BP West Java said production activities were<br>\nrunning normally despite its recent loss in a controversial court<br>\ncase bought by a chemical supplier.<\/p>\n<p>Pradakso Hadiwidjojo, BP Indonesia senior manager of<br>\ncommunications and internal affairs, said the court ruling did<br>\nnot hamper the company's work producing natural gas.<\/p>\n<p>BP West Java, a subsidiary of energy firm BP Indonesia,<br>\noperates offshore natural gas rigs in north East Java. It<br>\nsupplies natural gas for West Java, primarily to state power firm<br>\nPT PLN's plant.<\/p>\n<p>The South Jakarta District Court on Thursday ruled in favor of<br>\nchemical supplier PT Mestaco Swarnadwipa, who filed a lawsuit<br>\nagainst BP West Java after the company ended its business<br>\nrelations with Mestaco.  Mestaco had supplied a chemical to BP<br>\nwhich was found to be contaminated.<\/p>\n<p>The court ordered BP West Java to pay US$2.37 million or 3<br>\npercent of the total compensation of $70 million demanded by<br>\nMestaco.<\/p>\n<p>The court also froze BP West Java accounts in Citibank<br>\nJakarta.<\/p>\n<p>\"Our activities continue although the court has frozen the<br>\naccount,\" Pradakso told The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n<p>He would not give details on the sum of money in the account.<\/p>\n<p>The case began in mid-2001 when BP West Java stopped buying<br>\nthe chemical Halon 1301 from Mestaco after it found a liquid<br>\ncontaminating the supply during an inspection. Halon 1301 is a<br>\nchemical used to extinguish fires.<\/p>\n<p>Test results showed the substance was Dicloromethane, a<br>\nflammable chemical not used to extinguish fires.<\/p>\n<p>Mestaco filed the first lawsuit in November 2001 and demanded<br>\n$650 million in compensation, saying BP West Java had not<br>\nfollowed correct procedures ending its business relationship.<br>\nHowever, the court rejected Mestaco's claim.<\/p>\n<p>This was the second lawsuit filed by Mestaco.<\/p>",
