Boutros-Ghali starts RI visit today<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The role of the United Nations in a rapidly
\nchanging world will be one of the topics discussed when President
\nSoeharto meets with UN Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali
\ntomorrow.<\/p>\n
Minister\/State Secretary Moerdiono told reporters yesterday
\nthat Boutros-Ghali will begin his five-day visit in Indonesia
\ntoday.<\/p>\n
Aside from a brief meeting with Soeharto upon his arrival,
\nBoutros-Ghali, who will be here with his wife Leia Maria, will be
\nat the State Guest House resting after the long flight from New
\nYork.<\/p>\n
The main meeting between the two leaders is scheduled for
\ntomorrow, Moerdiono said. \"Their discussion is expected to hover
\naround regional and international issues, and to touch on the
\nkind of role the United Nations should play at a time of major
\nchanges.\"<\/p>\n
Boutros-Ghali pledged to strengthen the UN role in promoting
\ninternational peace and development when assuming the UN office
\nin 1992.<\/p>\n
Indonesia has also been campaigning to have the United
\nNations, which marks its 50th anniversary this year, reformed to
\nreflect the realities of today. Indonesia is currently the leader
\nof the Non-Aligned Movement and holds a non-permanent seat in the
\nUN Security Council.<\/p>\n
Tomorrow, Boutros-Ghali will also address the Foreign Policy
\nForum of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at the Borobudur
\nIntercontinental hotel and inaugurate the National Youth Forum on
\nEnvironment in Cibubur, East Jakarta.<\/p>\n
On Sunday, he will proceed to Bandung in West Java, to attend
\nthe commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the historic Asia-
\nAfrica Conference. The meeting will also be attended by Soeharto
\nand ministers from the 111-member Non-Aligned Movement.<\/p>\n
Indonesia is the first leg of Boutros-Ghali's lengthy tour
\nthat will also take him to Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, France
