For a number of political parties, their presidential
\ncandidates are no longer shrouded in mystery.<\/p>\n
The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI Perjuangan)
\nfor instance, is obviously renominating Megawati Soekarnoputri,
\nwho has no other rival within the party.<\/p>\n
The question of the National Mandate Party's (PAN)
\npresidential candidate has also been answered -- none other than
\nits chairman, Amien Rais.<\/p>\n
How about the Nation's Awakening Party (PKB)? Its chairman,
\nAbdurrahman Wahid, is rumored to have the ambition to become
\npresident again.<\/p>\n
As for the United Development Party (PPP), its chairman,
\nHamzah Haz, would surely be nominated.<\/p>\n
However, Golkar Party's presidential candidate until now is
\nunknown.<\/p>\n
Through a recent convention, the party made a breakthrough by
\nnetting its possible presidential candidates from the bottom.<\/p>\n
As a result, seven names have emerged -- Surya Paloh, Wiranto,
\nAburizal Barkrie, Akbar Tandjung, Jusuf Kalla, Prabowo Subianto,
\nand Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X. Who among them would be the
\nparty's final candidate however remains a big question.<\/p>\n
Thus before it is too late, the political elite should change
\nits orientation by keeping the bottom-up spirit rather than the

The extremely reactionary attitude of the modern Roman
\nCatholic Church has reached even higher realms of incredulity
\nwith its claims about condoms in the fight against AIDS. The
\nVatican strictly opposes birth control and hence also the use of
\ncondoms, and the stance has merely hardened during the tenure of
\nPope John Paul II.<\/p>\n
Cardinal Alfonso Lopez Trujillo, who heads the Pontifical
\nCouncil for the Family, told the British Broadcasting Corp. that
\nthe HIV virus is able to pass through "the net" formed by a
\ncondom.<\/p>\n
In developing countries people listen to the teachings of the
\nVatican in a totally different way than in developed Catholic
\ncountries, and the irresponsible comments by church leaders
\nsimply strengthens other similarly superstitious beliefs about
\nthis plague of our time.<\/p>\n
The spread of the Catholic Church's teachings has led to
\ntragic consequences in all countries where it wields influence.
\nAIDS is causing terrible havoc on all the continents.<\/p>\n

As the leaders of the global Anglican church meet in London
\ntoday on gay relationships, they poignantly do so conscious of
\nthe massive weight that falls on their shoulders to find a
\npractical solution that will stave off a potential split now
\nthreatening the 77-million member church.<\/p>\n
Along with the Anglican community throughout the world, we
\npray that God bestows upon these leaders biblical Solomon's
\nwisdom to calm the rumblings that have shaken the foundations of
\nthe church. In doing so, we earnestly hope that -- throughout the
\ndeliberations -- the church leaders will remain unshakable in
\ntheir resolve to do the right thing.<\/p>\n
