Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia — A shocking case has emerged in the United
States. Christa Pike, a death-row inmate, has reportedly regained
consciousness and begun speaking after surviving a failed attempt to
execute her by lethal injection in Tennessee last week.

Citing CNN International and BBC International, Pike’s lawyer, Randy
Spivey, said his client woke up in hospital “angry and confused”. Her
first two questions after regaining consciousness were: “Where am I?”
and “Who are you?”

She is reportedly the only prisoner in the United States known to
have survived an attempted execution by lethal injection. How did it
happen?

How the case began

Pike, 50, was subjected to an execution attempt on 30 September 2026.
She was sentenced to death for the 1995 murder of Colleen Slemmer. Pike
was 19 at the time. She and her then-boyfriend, Tadaryl Shipp, beat,
tortured and killed Slemmer.

Shipp was 17 when he committed the crime, so he could not be
sentenced to death because he was below the legal age of adulthood. He
remains in prison.

According to Pike’s lawyer, her legal team believed for several days
after the lethal injection that she had suffered brain death. They were
told that the life-support equipment sustaining her would soon be
removed.

But Pike’s condition changed unexpectedly. On Tuesday, 6 October, she
began speaking, although she remembered only a small part of what
happened during the execution attempt.

Her lawyer also said Pike had helped the execution team find a vein
in her arm. She was reportedly kind and polite during the injection
procedure.

After two doses of pentobarbital failed to kill her, Pike was taken
to hospital. She remained unconscious for several days while medical
staff worked to clear the drugs from her body.

Pike is currently receiving intensive medical care. Both her arms are
severely swollen, one arm has a blood clot, and she has pneumonia. She
is also reportedly unable to swallow.

“We don’t know what all of this will do to her mental health,” Pike’s
lawyer, Randy Spivey, said, describing her condition after waking as
“angry and confused”.

Judge orders evidence preserved

The failed execution could also become grounds for legal action
against the state of Tennessee. At an emergency hearing on Wednesday,
Pike’s lawyers asked a judge to order the state to preserve all evidence
relating to the execution.

Chancellor I’Ashea Myles ordered that all items in the execution
chamber be retained, including intravenous tubing, syringes, drug waste
and packaging, labels and related documents. The judge also requested
records documenting Pike’s psychological condition before, during and
after the attempted execution on 30 September.

Tennessee Deputy Attorney General Will Ayers said the case was in an
unusual procedural position. He argued that the emergency request was
unnecessary because the state was already obliged to preserve the
evidence.

The judge nevertheless asked the state to take particular care to
ensure that no information relevant to the case was lost, misplaced or
deleted. Asked whether Pike’s execution would be rescheduled, Ayers said
he did not know.

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee also issued a statement. He ordered a
temporary halt to all executions in the state until the end of the year,
saying the government needed answers about what had happened during
Pike’s execution attempt.

The head of Tennessee’s correctional agency also resigned following
the failed execution. Pike’s lawyer said communication with his client
had been very limited in recent days because she had been
unconscious.
",
