        "content": "<p>Border market to be opened<\/p>\n<p>JAYAPURA, Irian Jaya: Indonesia and Papua New Guinea (PNG)<br>\nhave agreed to open a new market for citizens living in the<br>\ncountries' border area to replace the traditional \"Sunday market\"<br>\nin Wutung village, PNG.<\/p>\n<p>Moses Poi, PNG's border liaison officer, was quoted by Antara<br>\nas saying Friday that the decision to do away with the \"Sunday<br>\nmarket\" -- which has evolved into a type of black market -- was<br>\ntaken during a border liaison meeting in Madang, PNG, earlier<br>\nthis month.<\/p>\n<p>The Sunday market, located some three kilometers from the<br>\nIndonesia-PNG border, was closed down by local police because of<br>\nthe illegal activities taking place.<\/p>\n<p>The new market will be located in Skouw village, Jayapura,<br>\nsome nine kilometers from the border, according to Indonesian<br>\nborder liaison official Alex Erubun.<\/p>\n<p>The market will be inaugurated this month but will start<br>\noperating in January, according to Antara.<\/p>\n<p>Residents will need their border-crossing identification cards<br>\n-- red for Indonesians and yellow for Papuans -- to visit the<br>\nmarket.<\/p>\n<p>Another Antara dispatch from Madang said that Indonesia will<br>\nno longer try to persuade Irian Jaya border crossers, currently<br>\nliving in PNG, to return.<\/p>\n<p>Brig.  Gen. Basyir Bachtiar, who leads the Indonesian<br>\ndelegation to the Indonesian-PNG Border Liaison Meeting, said the<br>\nborder crossers now living in PNG's East Awin Camp who did not<br>\nintend to return to their native villages would, from now on,<br>\nhave to fend for themselves.<\/p>\n<p>It was up to the PNG government whether they would be<br>\nofficially accepted as PNG citizens, Basyir said.<\/p>\n<p>However, Indonesia's doors remained open if they wished to<br>\nreturn, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Antara did not say how many Indonesians have crossed the<br>\nborder and now live in PNG.
