Books: A resource for all<\/p>\n

Books are said to be storehouses of knowledge, windows on the
\nworld, torches in the darkness and other names. The truth is that
\nbooks are useful for mankind. No one will ever deny that books
\ncan widen their readers insights, and that they will endlessly
\ntalk to their users.<\/p>\n
But as far as Indonesia is concerned, there are conflicting
\npolicies concerning the publication of books. On the one hand,
\nthe government rigorously talks about the need to enhance the
\nreading habits of the community. On the other hand, production of
\nbooks as a means of promoting knowledge does not get sufficient
\nsupport from related parties.<\/p>\n
The prices of books are relatively high, especially for people
\nwith low incomes. Even fictitious books may cost a few thousand
\nrupiah, not to mention scientific books. With that amount, you
\ncould buy ten meals at traditional food stalls.<\/p>\n
So how could we expect people with low incomes to have easy
\naccess to books? Books are in fact still regarded as a luxury in
\nthis country. Only a few people can really spend their money on
\nbooks freely.<\/p>\n
In this case, why shouldn't we learn from India? That country
\nintentionally encourages publication of cheap books using cheap
\nquality newsprint. For us, it is the content of the book that
\nmatters, and not its physical condition.<\/p>\n
I call on book collectors to share their reading resources
\nwith other people.<\/p>\n
