Book fair organizers criticized<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Publishers have criticized the discount policy
\nand security at the annual book fair which the Indonesian Book
\nPublishers' Association sponsors.<\/p>\n
On Wednesday, publishers speaking at the preparation meeting
\nfor the 1997 Jakarta Book Fair lashed out at the organizing
\ncommittee saying it had failed to make a clear policy on price
\ndiscounts on exhibited books and take necessary steps to deter
\npeople from stealing books.<\/p>\n
\"The committee did not have the ability to reach a standard
\ndiscount rate for books offered by the participating publishers,\"
\none publisher said.<\/p>\n
Dozens of book publishers were at the meeting.<\/p>\n
\"There were different discounts at different stands in the
\nexhibition,\" another publisher said.<\/p>\n
Committee chairwoman Kartini Nurdin said she hoped publishers
\nwould offer at least a 20 percent discount at the June Book Fair.<\/p>\n
But one publisher said it was hard to offer big discounts
\nbecause many books were stolen at the exhibition.<\/p>\n
Other publishers also complained about security. \"During last
\nyear's fair a motorcycle was reported missing,\" one said.<\/p>\n
Kartini promised the committee would do its best to meet their
\ndemands.<\/p>\n
Kartini said this year's exhibition theme was \"Reading is
\nFun\". She said the committee would hold two seminars and a
\ndiscussion on how to develop the theme.<\/p>\n
Kartini said there would be 112 stands for publishers.<\/p>\n
\"This year's exhibition will also be connected to the 470th
\nanniversary of Jakarta which will fall on June 22.\" Kartini said.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, committee member Aris Buntarman said he hoped the
\nJakarta Book Fair would one day be as big as the Frankfurt Book
\nFair.<\/p>\n
\"Indonesia should have a book fair of international standard,\"
\nhe said. Last year 4,000 titles were exhibited at the fair. (05)<\/p>",
