Bombings and JI<\/p>\n
Jamaah Islamiyah (JI) is made the scapegoat whenever there is
\na terrorist bombing in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
After being accused in the Bali bombing tragedy in October
\nlast year, the JI is once against suspected of being behind the
\nbombing of the JW Marriott Hotel in Jakarta.<\/p>\n
However, not all people are easily convinced by the police,
\nwho make the accusations in haste and without any reliable
\nevidence.<\/p>\n
As such, the controversy surrounding the terrorist bombings
\nlink to the JI, has overshadowed the real problem.<\/p>\n
Ironically, high-ranking security officials have a different
\nopinion on the true perpetrators of the Marriott Hotel bombing.<\/p>\n
The Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs,
\nSusilo Bambang Yudhoyono, remains unsure whether the Marriott
\nbombers belong to the JI, while former chairman of the team that
\ninvestigated the Bali bombing, I Made Mangku Pastika, is certain
\nthe JI was indeed the culprit of the bombing.<\/p>\n
Based on this controversy, prominent Islamic figure, Muslimin
\nNasution, said the implication of the JI in a series of bombings
\nin Indonesia, including the one at the Marriott Hotel, is an
\nexaggeration intended to blame Islam.<\/p>\n

Some 200 nuclear scientists and U.S. Defense Department
\nofficials have met in Nebraska to talk about adapting the U.S.
\nnuclear arsenal to the post-Cold War era.<\/p>\n
The United States' idea is to sharpen the nuclear deterrent by
\nbuilding what it calls "more useful" weapons where people are not
\nthe primary target. Instead, they want to go after targets like
\nstockpiled weapons of mass destruction with bunker-busting bombs.<\/p>\n
U.S. President George W. Bush has asked Congress to continue
\nfunding "bunker buster" nuclear bombs, some of which will have 10
\ntimes the destructive force of the atomic bomb dropped on
\nHiroshima in 1945. ...<\/p>\n
To blur the line between ordinary and nuclear weapons does not
\nmake the post-Cold War world any safer. If nuclear weapons become
\ncommonplace, they will be attractive to decision-makers around
\nthe world.<\/p>\n

The recent JW Marriott Hotel bombing in Jakarta which killed
\n12 people, and forced more than 150 others to be hospitalized for
\ninjuries, proved that terrorism does exist here.<\/p>\n
The terror leaves the public in fear and prolonged
\nuncertainty. Before JW Marriott, terrorists had bombed Sari Club
\nand Paddy's Pub in Kuta, Bali, leaving 202 people dead and more
\nthan 400 others injured. Other bombings had also occurred at
\nseveral other places.<\/p>\n
The Coordinating Minister for Political and Security, Susilo
\nBambang Yudhoyono, recently emphasized the fact that terrorism
\nexists in Indonesia. And thus the people continue to speculate on
\nthe matter.<\/p>\n
According to Yudhoyono, the most important thing is how to
\ndeal with terrorism.<\/p>\n
But in a democratic environment debate and freedom of speech
\nis all very well, provided that the debate is fair. Everybody
\nshould be able to talk and express their ideas, but talk without
\naction is pointless.<\/p>\n
In regard to the JW Marriott bombing and its aftermath, it is
\nimperative that we find ways and policies -- including laws and
\nrulings -- which are stronger, to prevent terrorism.<\/p>\n
