Bomb explosions, arson rock troubled Aceh<\/p>\n
BANDA ACEH, Aceh (JP): A series of bomb and arson attacks on
\ngovernment and police offices continued in the restive Aceh
\nprovince on Friday, with the Darul Imarah Police station in Aceh
\nBesar regency and the Banda Aceh office of religious affairs the
\ntargets.<\/p>\n
Banda Aceh Police operational department spokesman Supt. Y.
\nSuyatmo said on Friday there were no immediate reports of
\nfatalities in the latest incidents, but predicted the attacks had
\ncaused a material loss to the country of hundreds of millions of
\nrupiah.<\/p>\n
He accused the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) of being responsible
\nfor the latest bomb attack on the Darul Imarah Police station.<\/p>\n
\"We found a cable used to detonate the bomb from a distance of
\nsome 500 meters away,\" Suyatmo said.<\/p>\n
Suyatmo also said that an arson attack was carried out on the
\nlocal office of religious affairs in Kampung Mulia village, Banda
\nAceh, by a group of unidentified men.<\/p>\n
\"They poured gasoline inside the office,\" he said.<\/p>\n
No fatalities or significant damage were reported.<\/p>\n
Aceh Besar GAM commander Abu Tazurra confirmed the movement
\nplanted a bomb at the Darul Imarah Police station and others
\nalong the main streets in the area, but denied any involvement in
\nthe arson attack on the Banda Aceh religious affairs office.<\/p>\n
A series of bomb and arson attacks have damaged and demolished
\nseven government offices in Banda Aceh and several police and
\nmilitary district commands over the past few weeks.<\/p>\n
Previously, on Sept. 12, a homemade bomb exploded at the
\nprovincial council building. Two days after the incident, another
\nexplosion rocked a building at a housing complex of the local
\noffice of the Environmental Impact Management Agency and the
\nNational Land Agency in Kampung Mulia village.<\/p>\n
On Friday last week, the city public works office on Jl.
\nPemancar in Setui area was burned down.<\/p>\n
Earlier, on Monday, bomb attacks erupted at two separate
\nplaces in Banda Aceh mayoralty -- the Syiah Kuala district
\nreligious affairs office and the National Family Planning
\nCoordinating Board in Baet village.<\/p>\n
On the same day, a security guard managed to deactivate a
\nhomemade bomb planted in Peukan Bada district's administration
\noffice in Aceh Besar regency.<\/p>\n
In a separate development, Suyatmo said two trucks carrying
\nlogs and palm oil were intercepted on Friday by 10 people armed
\nwith long rifles.<\/p>\n
\"The armed civilians ordered the truck drivers to take them to
\nthe nearby village of Lameue, where they forced the two to unload
\nthe cargo. They abandoned the drivers there.<\/p>\n
\"The armed gang took the trucks and left the village, heading
\nto Meulaboh town in West Aceh,\" he said. (50\/lup)<\/p>",
