Bomb explosion aimed at 'tarnishing TNI'<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Jakarta Military commander Maj. Gen. Ryamizard
\nRyacudu said on Tuesday that last week's explosion in the
\nAttorney General's Office compound was aimed at tarnishing the
\nimage of the Indonesian Military (TNI).<\/p>\n
\"The first bomb, which exploded, was a homemade device. The
\nsecond, which bore the military's name, did not explode.
\nTherefore, people might think that the bombs were from the
\nmilitary,\" he announced after leading a function in Bekasi, which
\nsaw Maj. Hafil Fuddin installed as the new chief of the Seventh
\nBattlefield Artillery Battalion, replacing Lt. Col. Alva AG
\nNarande.<\/p>\n
\"Why did the second bomb not explode? There were factors
\nbehind how it was planted. So we should wait for the authorities'
\ninvestigation of the case,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Head of the National Police's General Information Division Sr.
\nSupt. Saleh Saaf said the police would focus on its investigation
\nand any interference with the investigation.<\/p>\n
\"The police have nearly completed its investigation, which is
\nbased on facts, evidence and clues found during the probe,\" he
\nsaid at his office on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Ryamizard said he regretted statements in the media which
\nconcluded that the military were behind the blast.<\/p>\n
\"Such statements have generated public opinion that military
\npersonnel were behind the blast. Any party could be tipped as the
\nsuspects in the blast -- pedicab drivers, police personnel, the
\nJakarta Military Command or Army personnel.<\/p>\n
\"However, no evidence has been found to confirm the
\ninvolvement of military personnel,\" he said.<\/p>\n
National Police chief Gen. Rusdihardjo said on Thursday that
\nstate-owned weapons manufacturer PT Pindad was the producer of
\nthe second bomb which was marked with the distinctive Military-
\nOne (M-1) code.<\/p>\n
Pindad is under the auspices of the Army, and all its
\nmanufactured goods are produced and distributed only for military
\npurposes.<\/p>\n
The second bomb was found by the police last Wednesday on the
\nceiling of the second floor bathroom of a building in the
\noffice's compound, right above the bathroom where the first bomb
\nexploded a day earlier.<\/p>\n
Ryamizard accused \"provocateurs\" of being behind the incident.<\/p>\n
\"We know that certain parties often create disturbances in the
\ncity. If they weren't here, the city would be safe. I can't name
\nany of the suspects at the moment as it may create problems,\" he
\nsaid without elaborating.<\/p>\n
The military commander supported on Monday a statement from
\nArmy chief Gen. Tyasno Sudarto in Semarang, Central Java. He said
\nit would set up a team to assist the police's ongoing
\ninvestigation.<\/p>\n
Saleh Saaf said the police would welcome any assistance.<\/p>\n
\"The police welcome any teams, including from the military or
\nprivate parties, to assist their investigation of the case.<\/p>\n
\"However, the authority to summon witnesses and suspects, to
\ninvestigate and finally take the case to court rests with the
\npolice,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, head of the police team investigating the case Sr.
\nSupt. Edward Aritonang said the South Jakarta Police were making
\nsketches of the two suspects behind the blast.<\/p>\n
\"The sketches have yet to be completed as we have to verify
\nthem first with the witnesses,\" he told The Jakarta Post by
\nphone.<\/p>\n
Based on information from witnesses, the police are searching
\nfor suspects who were seen carrying backpacks in the Attorney
\nGeneral's Office compound before the explosion.<\/p>\n
The police have so far questioned nine witnesses who were in
\nthe vicinity of the office when the blast occurred. (asa)<\/p>",
