Bomb explodes, destroys railway track in Serpong<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A bomb exploded early Saturday morning in the
\nmiddle of a railway bridge over the Cisadane river in Serpong
\ndistrict, Banten province, shortly after a freight train passed.<\/p>\n
A section of the railway track was destroyed but no fatalities
\nwere reported.<\/p>\n
Police also found two other bombs near the area, about one
\nkilometer from the Bumi Serpong Damai housing complex, some 30
\nkms from Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The National Police's Gegana bomb squad arrived at the scene
\nat about 7 a.m. and defused the bombs. It is still unclear what
\ntype of bombs they were.<\/p>\n
\"The bomb exploded at 2:25 a.m., just after the freight train
\nfrom Merak (Banten) en route to Surabaya (East Java) passed the
\narea,\" Tangerang Police chief Ast. Snr. Comr. Affan Rikwanto was
\nquoted by Antara as saying.<\/p>\n
Affan said the police were questioning several witnesses.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, spokesman for the state-owned railway company PT
\nKereta Api Indonesia (KAI) Zainal Abidin said the damaged section
\nof the tracks had been repaired.<\/p>\n
\"KAI cut off the damaged 10-meter section of the track and
\nchanged it,\" he said.<\/p>\n
\"The Jakarta-Merak route was temporarily closed. At least 40
\ntrains linking Jakarta to several cities in West Java such as
\nBanten, Cilegon, Tangerang, Rangkasbitung and Merak, could not
\noperate.\"<\/p>\n
KAI, he added, had yet to estimate the financial losses caused
\nby the explosion.<\/p>\n
The trains resumed operation at 10:55 a.m., after the damaged
\ntrack was repaired.<\/p>\n
Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications Agum Gumelar
\ncondemned the bomb attack and urged the authorities to find the
\nculprits.<\/p>\n
\"This is too much,\" Agum said.<\/p>\n
He said he had asked intelligence officers to investigate the
\nincident.<\/p>\n
Agum added that his ministry had received several bomb threats
\nagainst public transportation.<\/p>\n
On Jan. 8, a boy found three live grenades on a railway track
\nin Lemah Abang district, Bekasi, West Java.<\/p>\n
Several grenades and suspicious looking objects were found in
\ndifferent places, including in a warehouse at St. Carolus
\nHospital, last week.<\/p>\n
Jakarta Police chief Insp. Gen. Mulyono said on Friday that
\nthis indicated an attempt to create chaos.<\/p>\n
The city was rocked by a wave of bomb attacks last year.<\/p>\n
Ten people were killed when a bomb exploded in the parking lot
\nof the Jakarta Stock Exchange on Jl. Sudirman in September.<\/p>\n
On Christmas Eve, bombs exploded in several parts of the
\ncountry, including Jakarta, claiming 19 lives. (jun)<\/p>",
