Bojong vandalism provoked: Police<\/p>\n

Bogor Police said on Tuesday that they suspected that vandalism
\nat a waste treatment facility in Bojong subdistrict on Monday may
\nhave been provoked by an unidentified group.<\/p>\n
\"I see irregularities in this case and suspect that a group
\nmay have provoked the locals. The locals no longer respect
\nauthorities, from community units up to the district level,\"
\nchief Sr. Comr. Bambang Wasgito said.<\/p>\n
No arrests have been made in connection with the case.<\/p>\n
Although there was no reports of injury, a security post, four
\nmotorcycles and the plant's office were left in ruins as a result
\nof the violent attack.<\/p>\n
Jakarta Governor Sutiyoso also suspected that outsiders may
\nhave instigated the violence.<\/p>\n
\"I have contacted the Bogor Police chief (Sr. Comr. Bambang
\nWasgito) in connection with the incident. We will await the
\nresult of investigation,\" Sutiyoso said.<\/p>\n
\"The incident was clearly a crime. Police must prevent
\nrecurrences of similar violence.\"<\/p>\n
Amir Sagala, an official with the Jakarta Sanitation Agency,
\nwas quick to blame a private developer.<\/p>\n
\"We received a report that four employees of a private
\ndeveloper around the plant were involved in mass rallies to
\nprotest the operation of the plant,\" Sagala said.<\/p>\n
Despite strong and violent opposition from locals, Jakarta
\ninsisted that it would stick to its plan to use the facility to
\nprocess around 2,000 tons of the capital's 6,000 tons of daily
\nwaste.<\/p>\n
Bogor regency spokesman Sjahuri reiterated that the waste
\ntreatment was not the same as the Bantar Gebang dump in Bekasi,
\nwhich uses a landfill system that had polluted neighboring areas
\nand caused respiratory problems and skin diseases.<\/p>\n
\"The resistance of Bojong residents against the existence of
\nthe plant is irrational ... they should give the plant a chance
\nto operate ... We will close it for good if it is proven to
\ndamage the environment,\" he said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
The situation around the facility run by PT Wira Sarana
\nSejahtera had returned normal on Tuesday. The access road has
\nbeen cleared of felled trees and boulders.<\/p>\n
Police attempted to mediate between locals and Bogor officials
\nand the plant operator. However, only eight locals and one
\nsubdistrict chief showed up at the meeting.<\/p>",
