        "content": "<p>Bojong case trial begins, Komnas Ham blames project<\/p>\n<p>Theresia Sufa<br>\nThe Jakarta Post\/Bogor\/Jakarta<\/p>\n<p>The trials of 17 defendants of the Nov. 22 bloody clash in Bojong <br>\ngarbage treatment facility, Bogor regency, started on Wednesday <br>\nat the Cibinong District Court.<\/p>\n<p>In the trial that took place in three sessions, the defendants <br>\nwere charged with violating Article 170 of the Criminal Code on <br>\nviolent behavior.<\/p>\n<p>In the indictment, prosecutors accused the defendants of <br>\nhaving destroyed private property, including the plant's <br>\nbuildings, cars and equipment. They also used weapons and <br>\nexplosives during the violent clash. The protest involved around <br>\n1,000 protesters.<\/p>\n<p>Another defendant, 15-year-old Atang Ombak, stood trial in a <br>\nseparate closed trial on similar charges. However, the court <br>\ndecided to postpone Atang's detention considering he is still a <br>\nminor.<\/p>\n<p>The prosecutors said the defendants had caused the plant <br>\noperator PT Wira Guna Sejahtera to suffer Rp 8 billion <br>\n(US$860,215) in material losses.<\/p>\n<p>In Central Jakarta, around 200 Bojong residents representing <br>\nseven villages around the plant held a rally in front of the <br>\nNational Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM), demanding the <br>\nrights commission establish a special team to investigate human <br>\nrights violations in the bloody clash.<\/p>\n<p>Erwin Usman of the Indonesian Forum for the Environment <br>\n(Walhi) said the protesters demanded that Komnas explain the <br>\ndefinition of a human rights violation. \"We want to know their <br>\nopinion on the Bojong incident.\"<\/p>\n<p>Komnas chairman Abdul Hakim Garuda Nusantara told the <br>\nprotesters that the commission had made recommendations to the <br>\nNational Police over the incident.<\/p>\n<p>\"It is one of the projects that violates human rights as <br>\nlocals were not involved in the decision making process to build <br>\nthe facility,\" he said as quoted by Antara.<\/p>",
