Bojong case trial begins, Komnas Ham blames project<\/p>\n

The trials of 17 defendants of the Nov. 22 bloody clash in Bojong
\ngarbage treatment facility, Bogor regency, started on Wednesday
\nat the Cibinong District Court.<\/p>\n
In the trial that took place in three sessions, the defendants
\nwere charged with violating Article 170 of the Criminal Code on
\nviolent behavior.<\/p>\n
In the indictment, prosecutors accused the defendants of
\nhaving destroyed private property, including the plant's
\nbuildings, cars and equipment. They also used weapons and
\nexplosives during the violent clash. The protest involved around
\n1,000 protesters.<\/p>\n
Another defendant, 15-year-old Atang Ombak, stood trial in a
\nseparate closed trial on similar charges. However, the court
\ndecided to postpone Atang's detention considering he is still a
\nminor.<\/p>\n
The prosecutors said the defendants had caused the plant
\noperator PT Wira Guna Sejahtera to suffer Rp 8 billion
\n(US$860,215) in material losses.<\/p>\n
In Central Jakarta, around 200 Bojong residents representing
\nseven villages around the plant held a rally in front of the
\nNational Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM), demanding the
\nrights commission establish a special team to investigate human
\nrights violations in the bloody clash.<\/p>\n
Erwin Usman of the Indonesian Forum for the Environment
\n(Walhi) said the protesters demanded that Komnas explain the
\ndefinition of a human rights violation. \"We want to know their
\nopinion on the Bojong incident.\"<\/p>\n
Komnas chairman Abdul Hakim Garuda Nusantara told the
\nprotesters that the commission had made recommendations to the
\nNational Police over the incident.<\/p>\n
\"It is one of the projects that violates human rights as
\nlocals were not involved in the decision making process to build
\nthe facility,\" he said as quoted by Antara.<\/p>",
