Bogor residents continue protests against nightspots<\/p>\n
BOGOR (JP): At least 300 people from three districts here
\nvisited the Bogor council for the second time Saturday to
\nreemphasize their demands for the immediate closure of nightspots
\nin the Puncak resort area.<\/p>\n
Residents of Cisarua, Mega Mendung and Ciawi thronged to the
\ncouncil following an incident on Thursday in which hundreds of
\npeople, including Moslem scholars, from six villages in Cisarua
\ndistrict ran amok and destroyed at least 16 buildings, including
\nvillas, discotheques and massage parlors along the mountainous
\nPuncak pass road.<\/p>\n
According to one resident, the local community was strongly
\nurging authorities to take stern action against owners of
\nnightspots -- which they said sold sex and drugs -- which were
\nopen for business despite being ordered to close down by the
\ngovernment.<\/p>\n
The crowd was received by representatives of the council,
\npolice and military command.<\/p>\n
On July 13, residents visited the Bogor regional council and
\nthe West Java provincial council to lodge a complaint. The
\ncouncilors, however, apparently gave no appropriate response to
\nthe people's complaint.<\/p>\n
"The entertainment spots were still operating. We are worried
\nthat they will degrade the morals of our youngsters," one
\nresident told reporters Saturday.<\/p>\n
During Thursday's incident, the protesters also herded 11
\nalleged prostitutes to the Cisarua Police Station and staged
\nrallies outside seven villas reportedly rented by foreigners.<\/p>\n
Among the discotheques stoned during the incident were Monggo
\nMas, Studio 20, Imagination, Goa, Dewa Dewi and Ligina.<\/p>\n
An executive of Monggo Mas discotheque, Teddy F Agung,
\nexpressed fear that the angry mobs would return to destroy his
\nestablishment.<\/p>\n
"I'm afraid of a possible new wave of unrest. Nobody knows
\nwhat will happen," he told Antara.<\/p>\n
The establishment suffered a Rp 20 million loss due to the
\nunrest.<\/p>\n
Security officers were seen still patrolling the area on
