Civil servants in Bogor Regency, West Java, have publicly pledged to enhance environmental stewardship, focusing on waste reduction at the source. The declaration, part of World Environment Day and Bogor's 544th anniversary, aims to make the 44,000-strong workforce agents of change before expanding the initiative to the regency's six million residents. The local government also inaugurated subdistrict-level Environmentally Friendly Village forums to strengthen community-based management.

Civil servants within the Bogor Regency Government, West Java, have
declared a commitment to environmental management as part of an effort
to foster a culture of environmental awareness and reduce waste at its
source. The declaration was made during the ‘Budaya Ngalokat Cai’ (Water
Conservation Culture) event at the Telaga Saat area in Cisarua District,
Bogor Regency, on Friday, coinciding with World Environment Day and the
series of events for Bogor’s 544th anniversary. Acting Head of the Bogor
Regency Environmental Agency, Unu Nur Iman, stated that the declaration
represents the civil servants’ commitment to serving as both examples
and agents of change in environmental management within the community.
According to him, this declaration is the initial step to build
environmental awareness internally within the local government before it
is expanded to the wider public. He explained that civil servants are
encouraged to implement independent organic waste management through the
use of household or communal composters in their respective living
environments. ‘The hope is that these civil servants will become agents
of change and carry out socialisation to the community. We should not
talk about six million residents yet; we talk about approximately 44,000
civil servants first,’ he said. In addition to the civil servant
declaration, the event also featured the reading of environmental
commitments by business actors and MSMEs, including businesses with the
potential to generate waste in the Cileungsi River Basin area. According
to Unu, the involvement of various elements of society is necessary
because environmental issues cannot be resolved solely by the local
government. ‘If the movement is collective, in accordance with the Bogor
Anniversary motto of moving in unison and making an impact, it will
certainly bring a positive climate for the environment,’ he said. At the
same occasion, the Bogor Regency Government also inaugurated the
administrators of the subdistrict-level Environmentally Friendly Village
Forum as part of a strategy to strengthen community-based environmental
management. The forum is expected to serve as an educational platform
while expanding the implementation of waste management and environmental
conservation at the village level. Bogor Regency Regional Secretary Ajat
Rochmat Jatnika stated that environmental conservation requires the
involvement of all elements of society, from the government and
communities to business actors and the mass media. Therefore, the
various declarations and pledges made during the event are expected not
to remain mere ceremonies but to become commitments realised through
concrete actions. ‘Our message is simple: do not stop here. Take steps
that may not always be visible and may not always receive praise, but
provide a real impact on the environment,’ said Ajat.
",
