Bogor mayor's tenure extended<\/p>\n
BOGOR (JP): Bogor Mayor Eddy Gunardi's tenure, which was
\nscheduled to end on March 7, was extended until further notice by
\nthe Ministry of Home Affairs in the absence of suitable
\ncandidates to replace him, an official said.<\/p>\n
\"Information about the extension of the mayor's tenure was
\npassed on to the mayoralty through the West Java governor's
\nletter dated March 6,\" the mayoralty's spokesman Hari Harsono
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Hari said a new mayor was to be elected on Feb. 15 to replace
\nEddy. However, the election was indefinitely postponed as the
\nBogor council speaker Eman Akman refused to approve and ratify
\nthe five existing candidates on the grounds that they did not
\nmeet administrative requirements.<\/p>\n
The five candidates were identified as Chaerudin A. Nawawi,
\nEndang Kurnia, R. Iswara Natanegara, Usman Zakaria and Syafei
\nBratasenjaya.<\/p>\n
This refusal caused public protests and demonstrations in
\nwhich protesters once managed to 'occupy' the council and force
\nthe council's speaker to propose Kurnia as a candidate.<\/p>\n
This proposal, however, was rejected by West Java Governor R.
\nNuriana as Kurnia failed to meet requirements.<\/p>\n
The council then proposed Rumawan Sadeli as a candidate. A
\nproposal for his election was signed by two of the Bogor city
\ncouncil's deputy speakers.<\/p>\n
\"Although this proposal was not signed by the council speaker,
\nit is still legitimate since the council has a collective
\nleadership,\" deputy speaker Eman Sulaeman said.<\/p>\n
He said the West Java governor accepted the proposal in
\nprinciple, but questioned why the council speaker still refused
