Bogor housing projects threaten water supply<\/p>\n
BOGOR (JP): Housing construction in Bogor has grown
\nuncontrollably and could affect the supply of groundwater to
\nJakarta if preventive measures are not taken.<\/p>\n
Istiqlal, an executive at the Land and Agroclimate Research
\nCenter, told Antara on Wednesday that it is time for the Bogor
\ncity administration to start controlling the development of the
\nhousing complexes and golf courses in the area.<\/p>\n
He said the rapid growth in construction has severely damaged
\na number of water catchment areas in the Sentul and Hambalang
\ndistricts.<\/p>\n
\"Trees badly needed to help hold rainwater in the water
\ncatchment areas were felled to make way for thousands of houses
\nand other buildings,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Istiqlal underlined the need to control the issuance of
\nbuilding permits in the two districts to help maintain the water
\ncatchment areas.<\/p>\n
\"If the problems are not solved Jakartans will face drinking
\nwater shortages in the near future,\" he warned.<\/p>\n
Istiqlal also called for the removal of buildings illegally
\nconstructed along river banks which are eroding and damaging
\nwater catchments.<\/p>\n
The groundwater level in the city has fallen steadily,
\naccelerating the intrusion of sea water. Moreover, groundwater is
\ncontaminated in a number of areas.<\/p>\n
The causes of contamination include human feces, detergent and
\nsea water, Istiqlal said. (hhr)<\/p>",
