Bogor gardens to help develop mangrove conservation area<\/p>\n

The Jakarta administration has plans to develop a mangrove
\nconservation area on the northern coast of Ancol in cooperation
\nwith the Bogor Botanical Gardens, the garden's director says.<\/p>\n
Irawati said Jakarta officials had asked her to find experts
\non mangroves to be involved in the project, Jakarta's first
\nmangrove-only botanical park.<\/p>\n
\"We think it's a good idea to develop a collection of
\nmangroves in a botanical park, because we don't have a complete
\ncollection of mangroves in the Bogor Botanical Gardens,\" she said
\nin a recent interview.<\/p>\n
However, Irawati said the project could face significant
\nproblems \"because there is severe sea pollution in the northern
\ncoast, caused by both household and industrial waste\".<\/p>\n
Several private companies had also contacted garden management
\nto help in their plans to develop botanical gardens in the city,
\nIrwanti said.<\/p>\n
One of them, housing estate developer Mega Kebun Jeruk, is to
\nsign a cooperation agreement with garden management on Friday.<\/p>\n
The firm would help collect a range of plants, including the
\nnearly extinct menteng and kemang fruit trees, the names of which
\nhave been immortalized as wealthy suburbs in Jakarta.<\/p>\n
\"The projects are in line with our intention to develop as
\nmany botanical parks nationwide before our forests are gone
\nbecause of illegal logging or development,\" Irawati said.<\/p>",
