Bogor closes sand mining operation<\/p>\n

Bogor Public Order Agency closed a sand mining operation in Bukit
\nPasir Buncir, Kampung Lengkong, in Caringin district which is an
\nkey catchment area.<\/p>\n
The order to close the area was issued on Thursday to avoid
\nflooding which usually affects downstream Jakarta and landslides,
\nwhich have killed many of the sand miners.<\/p>\n
Head of the Bogor Mining Agency, Adjat Sudrajat, said that the
\narea was officially closed in 1998.<\/p>\n
"The operation there was illegal, we never issued a license to
\npermit any operation in the water catchment area," he said.<\/p>\n
He added that the sand mining activities in the area were a
\nviolation of Presidential Decree No. 17\/1999 on development of
\nBogor, Puncak and Cianjur areas, and Bogor Bylaw No. 17\/2000 on
\ncity spatial plan.<\/p>\n
"There should be a comprehensive study on this matter
\ninvolving the central government, Bogor administration as well as
\nthe West Java provincial administration, because any policies
\ntaken on the sand mining would surely affect Jakarta," Adjat
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
He explained that market demand for the quality sand was high
\nin Jakarta, while Bukit Pasir Buncir has sand that could be
\nexploited for another 20 years.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Bogor Legislative Council deputy speaker Karyawan
\nFaturahman said that the administration should protect the area
\nwhich had been claimed by individuals who later sold part of the
\narea to mining companies.<\/p>",
