        "content": "<p>Bogor closes sand mining operation<\/p>\n<p>Theresia Sufa, The Jakarta Post\/Bogor<\/p>\n<p>Bogor Public Order Agency closed a sand mining operation in Bukit<br>\nPasir Buncir, Kampung Lengkong, in Caringin district which is an<br>\nkey catchment area.<\/p>\n<p>The order to close the area was issued on Thursday to avoid<br>\nflooding which usually affects downstream Jakarta and landslides,<br>\nwhich have killed many of the sand miners.<\/p>\n<p>Head of the Bogor Mining Agency, Adjat Sudrajat, said that the<br>\narea was officially closed in 1998.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The operation there was illegal, we never issued a license to<br>\npermit any operation in the water catchment area,&quot; he said.<\/p>\n<p>He added that the sand mining activities in the area were a<br>\nviolation of Presidential Decree No. 17\/1999 on development of<br>\nBogor, Puncak and Cianjur areas, and Bogor Bylaw No. 17\/2000 on<br>\ncity spatial plan.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;There should be a comprehensive study on this matter<br>\ninvolving the central government, Bogor administration as well as<br>\nthe West Java provincial administration, because any policies<br>\ntaken on the sand mining would surely affect Jakarta,&quot; Adjat<br>\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p>He explained that market demand for the quality sand was high<br>\nin Jakarta, while Bukit Pasir Buncir has sand that could be<br>\nexploited for another 20 years.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Bogor Legislative Council deputy speaker Karyawan<br>\nFaturahman said that the administration should protect the area<br>\nwhich had been claimed by individuals who later sold part of the<br>\narea to mining companies.<\/p>",
