Bodyguard admits document forgery<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Dedi Sutaedi Yusuf, a former bodyguard to Hutomo
\n\"Tommy\" Mandala Putra, admitted on Monday that he had forged
\ndocuments under orders from his then boss.<\/p>\n
Dedi pleaded for his sentence to be commuted in a hearing at
\nthe South Jakarta District Court on Monday on the grounds that he
\nhad committed forgery only after being ordered to do so by Tommy,
\nthe youngest son of former president Soeharto.<\/p>\n
\"The defendant could not refuse to carry out (Tommmy's) orders
\nbecause he was deeply indebted to his boss,\" said his lawyer M.
\nSawir Achmad, without elaborating.<\/p>\n
Dedi, 34, and another of Tommy's former bodyguards, Tommy
\nHukom, are facing a possible two years in prison for allegedly
\nforging documents to help Tommy escape capture by police.<\/p>\n
The origins of the case can be traced to May last year, when
\nTommy phoned Dedi and asked for a passport, for use in an
\nemergency. Dedi and Ferry then ordered a newspaper seller to
\narrange illegal documents, including an ID card, birth
\ncertificate and a family card (kartu keluarga).<\/p>\n
Dedi provided two photographs showing Tommy with a beard and
\nmoustache, and with the name 'Ibrahim' written on the back. The
\npseudonym became widely known after the police disseminated the
\nphoto to the public as part of their search for Tommy.<\/p>\n
But Tommy himself was not implicated in the crime until
\nMonday, when police extended his detention for another 30 days.<\/p>\n
He had earlier been named a suspect in two separate cases,
\nnamely, the murder of Supreme Justice M. Syafiuddin Kartasasmita
\nand the illegal possession of firearms.<\/p>\n
Police have sent dossiers on the cases to the State
\nProsecutor's Office, but it has yet to make further
\ninvestigations.<\/p>\n
The youngest son of former president Soeharto became a
\nfugitive in November 2000 to avoid a sentence of 18 months
\nimprisonment for corruption.<\/p>",
