Bob Hasan to give help to unemployed journalists<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Timber tycoon Mohammad (Bob) Hasan, widely
\nrumored to be linked with the establishment of a new magazine to
\nreplace the defunct Tempo newsweekly, insisted yesterday that he
\nsimply wanted to accommodate the displaced journalists.<\/p>\n
\"Yes, I'm thinking of helping them out,\" he told reporters
\nyesterday when he was pressed about his intention of establishing
\na new magazine employing the former journalists of Tempo.<\/p>\n
\"They could be employed in my company or they start a new
\nmagazine. We'll have to think this through,\" said Bob, who is
\nalso the proprietor of two magazines, Paron and Sportif.<\/p>\n
He said that as a matter of policy, he never interfered in the
\nday to day editorial decisions of his magazines. \"In business, I
\nwant everyone to be professional.\"<\/p>\n
However, he said that he would interfere in editorial
\ndecisions if the national interest is at stake. \"If an article
\nattacks the government, then I will have to intervene on the
\neditorial board.\"<\/p>\n
The government revoked the publishing license of Tempo in June
\nsaying that the magazine has repeatedly ignored its warnings
\nabout the editorial content.<\/p>\n
Since then, various factions in the magazine have apparently
\nbeen competing to establish a new magazine with a new license and
\nnew shareholders and a new name. The government has promised that
\nit will issue a new license to former Tempo employees.<\/p>\n
One camp within Tempo is believed to support the entry of Bob
\nHasan but the majority prefers to go it alone, using the 20
\npercent equity the employees had in the magazine as the capital
\nto start a new magazine.<\/p>\n
On Wednesday, Bambang Bujono, who claims to have the mandate
\nof former Tempo employees, said that out of Tempo's 78
\njournalists, only 14 wanted to join Bob Hasan.<\/p>\n
Bambang and his colleagues early this month applied for a new
\npublishing license for a magazine they call Opini (Opinion).
