        "content": "<p>A magnitude 7.7 earthquake shook Nagekeo Regency, East Nusa Tenggara\n(NTT), on Saturday morning (15\/8\/2026) at 04.58 WIB. The powerful tremor\nwas centred at sea at a depth of 15 km, 38 km northeast of Mbay,\nNagekeo.<\/p>\n<p>The massive quake not only struck NTT but was also felt strongly as\nfar as West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) and Sulawesi Island.<\/p>\n<p>A preliminary report from the Sikka Military District Command\nrecorded that the earthquake caused severe damage in the El Say Port\narea, Sikka Regency. Two people were reported dead (one male and one\nfemale), while another resident sustained injuries. A joint team from\nBasarnas, the Indonesian National Armed Forces, and the National Police\nis now moving quickly to carry out evacuations at the location.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCasualty data is still in the process of verification and further\ndata collection by the team in the field,\u201d wrote the official report of\nthe National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB). After further\nverification, the latest report stated that one person had died and four\nothers were injured.<\/p>\n<p>Residents Fled<\/p>\n<p>The powerful shaking, lasting about one minute, triggered panic in\nNageoeo, Sikka, and West Manggarai Regencies. Residents rushed out of\ntheir homes to save themselves.<\/p>\n<p>In response to the Tsunami Early Warning that was briefly activated\nafter the quake, the local Regional Disaster Management Agency\nimmediately directed emergency evacuations for communities along the\ncoastal areas.<\/p>\n<p>Panic also reached Bima City (NTB) and parts of South Sulawesi such\nas Jeneponto Regency, Selayar Islands, and Maros, where residents also\nfelt strong tremors.<\/p>\n<p>A Series of Aftershocks Pounded NTT<\/p>\n<p>Following the mainshock, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics\nAgency (BMKG) recorded a series of aftershocks with considerable\nmagnitudes continuing to bombard the NTT region. Some of them\nincluded:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><p>At 05.13 WIB: Magnitude 6.2<\/p><\/li>\n<li><p>At 05.28 WIB: Magnitude 6.2<\/p><\/li>\n<li><p>At 05.37 WIB: Magnitude 5.6<\/p><\/li>\n<li><p>As well as several other aftershocks ranging around Magnitude\n5.5.<\/p><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Nevertheless, BNPB confirmed that the series of aftershocks was\nreported not to have tsunami potential.<\/p>\n<p>Official Appeal from BNPB<\/p>\n<p>As of the time this news was published, BNPB, together with the\nRegional Disaster Management Agency and joint apparatus, was still\ncontinuing to update data regarding the total number of fatalities,\ninjuries, and the level of infrastructure damage.<\/p>\n<p>BNPB urged the public\u2014especially those in coastal areas\u2014to remain\ncalm, stay alert, and stay away from buildings that are cracked or\nstructurally damaged. The public was also asked not to blindly consume\nwild rumours and to only monitor official information from BMKG, BNPB,\nRegional Disaster Management Agency, and the Indonesian National Armed\nForces-National Police channels.<\/p>",
