        "content": "<p>The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has revealed three\nmain obstacles that make forest and land fires (karhutla) difficult to\nextinguish in several regions of Indonesia. These obstacles are drought,\ndifficulty in obtaining water sources, and the need for canal\nnormalisation, which pose major challenges for field personnel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFirst, drought with many days without rain. Difficulty in obtaining\nwater in the field, including in South Kalimantan. Wells and canal\nnormalisation are needed,\u201d said BNPB Data and Information Centre Head\nBerton Pandjaitan to reporters on Sunday (23\/8\/2026).<\/p>\n<p>According to Berton, ground-based firefighting remains the primary\neffort to tackle forest and land fires. Meanwhile, the deployment of\nhelicopters for water bombing serves as aerial support for fire\nsuppression. \u201cThe main effort is from the ground. Air support is\nsupplementary,\u201d said Berton.<\/p>\n<p>To address water availability constraints, BNPB plans to construct\nwells in locations that require water supply for firefighting. The well\nconstruction will be assisted by the Indonesian National Armed Forces\n(TNI). \u201cThe plan is to build wells with assistance from the TNI,\u201d Berton\nadded.<\/p>\n<p>President Prabowo Subianto previously confirmed that the government\ncontinues to strengthen forest and land fire mitigation measures,\nparticularly to prevent the spread of hotspots. \u201cThe important thing is\nthat we immediately halt the expansion of additional hotspots,\u201d Prabowo\ntold reporters at Tjilik Riwut Airport in Palangka Raya, Central\nKalimantan, on Saturday (22\/8\/2026).<\/p>\n<p>Prabowo said the central government also continues to meet regional\nneeds in handling forest and land fires, from additional water bombing\nhelicopters to drilling machines for locating water sources. \u201cEvery day\nwe add helicopters, equipment, drilling machines for water, and we\nfulfil all the necessary supplies,\u201d he said.<\/p>",
