        "content": "<p>The National Narcotics Agency of the Republic of Indonesia (BNN RI)\nhas stated that electronic cigarettes, or vapes, serving as a gateway\nfor narcotics is an undeniable fact.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have found undeniable evidence that vapes have become an\neffective means \u2014 a new medium \u2014 for consuming narcotics and new\npsychoactive substances (NPS),\u201d said BNN RI Chief Commissioner General\nSuyudi Ario Seto in his opening address at a Focus Group Discussion\n(FGD) at the BNN RI building in Jakarta on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Based on BNN\u2019s findings, Suyudi asserted that the narrative of vapes\nas a smoking cessation tool is an illusion that has not been\nscientifically proven. In practice, vapes have instead become a new\nentry point for drug use.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wish to emphasise here that the narrative of vapes as a smoking\ncessation aid is an illusion that has not been proven effective\nscientifically. On the contrary, these products have in fact opened a\nnew gateway,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n<p>Suyudi also explained that the contents of vapes cannot be\nimmediately identified when in use, including the fragrant vapour\nemitted by the devices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey can use them anywhere \u2014 and they smell pleasant, too. So people\nhave no idea that the contents are actually narcotics,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>According to Suyudi, electronic cigarettes have become the ideal\nmeans of concealment, transforming from conventional tools such as the\nuse of methamphetamine in bongs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are chemical substances, liquids. So the vape is the most\nsuitable device for users to hide behind, as opposed to conventional\ntools like bongs,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Suyudi noted that vape cartridges have frequently been found to\ncontain addictive substances including liquid methamphetamine,\netomidate, and other new types of narcotics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the problem. It appears as though someone is simply using a\nvape, seemingly smoking an electronic cigarette, but the contents turn\nout to be liquid methamphetamine. The contents are etomidate, chemical\nsubstances classified as narcotics,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<p>Suyudi further explained that vape liquid, or e-liquid, contains\nnarcotics classified under schedules one and two, comprising nicotine,\npropylene glycol, glycerine, and a number of addictive substances\nforming a chemical cocktail.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom a chemical substance perspective, vape liquid or e-liquid is a\nchemical cocktail. It contains nicotine, propylene glycol, glycerine,\nvegetable compounds, as well as flavouring agents such as diacetyl,\nacetyl pyridine, and benzaldehyde, which pose significant new health\nrisks,\u201d he said.<\/p>",
