        "content": "<p>The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), through\nits Region IV Makassar Centre, has issued an early warning for extreme\nweather across South Sulawesi, effective from 24 February to 1 March\n2026.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring the period from 24 February to 1 March 2026, rainfall of\nheavy to very heavy intensity is expected,\u201d said Nasrol Adil, Acting\nHead of BBMKG Region IV Makassar, in a statement on Tuesday (24\nFebruary).<\/p>\n<p>Nasrol explained that the increased potential for high rainfall\nacross several areas of South Sulawesi is driven by a combination of\natmospheric dynamics, including Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO)\nactivity, Kelvin waves, Rossby waves, and wind convergence that supports\nthe development of convective clouds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHeavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in the areas of Parepare,\nBarru, Pangkajene and Islands, Maros, Makassar, Gowa, Takalar, and\nSelayar Islands,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, moderate to heavy rainfall is forecast for parts of North\nLuwu, Pinrang, Sidrap, Soppeng, Bone, Sinjai, Jeneponto, Bantaeng, and\nBulukumba.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn addition to heavy rain, strong winds are also expected in the\nwestern and southern parts of South Sulawesi,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>BMKG has warned coastal communities and fishermen to be alert to\npotential high waves of 1.25 to 2.5 metres in several waters, including\nthe waters off Pinrang, Barru, Makassar, Pangkep, Selayar Islands,\nBulukumba, Takabonerate Islands, and Jeneponto.<\/p>\n<p>In response to these conditions, BMKG has called on all stakeholders\nand the public to heighten their preparedness, including ensuring the\nreadiness of infrastructure and water resource management systems,\ncarrying out environmental improvements, and trimming and reinforcing\ntrees at risk of falling.<\/p>\n<p>BMKG has urged the public to increase vigilance against extreme\nweather that could trigger hydrometeorological disasters such as floods,\nflash floods, landslides, strong winds, falling trees, and high\nwaves.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe public is also urged not to dispose of rubbish indiscriminately,\nto stay away from affected locations, and to actively monitor official\ninformation and early weather warnings from BMKG,\u201d he said.<\/p>",
