Indonesia's Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) has attributed the recent heat wave affecting Jakarta to reduced cloud cover, allowing solar radiation to reach the surface more efficiently. The phenomenon is typical during seasonal transitions and is intensified by the urban heat island effect, whereby cities retain heat longer than surrounding areas. BMKG advises that such daytime heat conditions are likely to persist in the coming weeks when cloud cover decreases.

Jakarta — The Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency
(BMKG) has revealed the cause of high temperatures affecting Jakarta and
its surroundings over recent days.

Acting Deputy for Meteorology at BMKG, Dr Andri Ramdhani, explained
that the temperature increase is driven by reduced cloud cover.
“Meteorologically, this condition is influenced by relatively diminished
cloud cover, allowing solar radiation to be received by the surface more
optimally,” he said when contacted by Kompas.com on Sunday (15 March
2026).

According to him, such conditions are common during seasonal
transitions. “When skies tend to be clearer during daytime, surface
heating becomes more intense,” he noted.

Andri also revealed that the heat effect is felt more intensely due
to the urban heat island phenomenon, as seen in Jakarta. This phenomenon
represents the tendency of urban areas to retain heat longer compared to
surrounding regions.

He added that hot conditions during the day still have the potential
to occur in the coming weeks, particularly when cloud cover
diminishes.
",
