        "content": "<p>The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has\nrecorded 7,578 hotspots up to early August 2026. The figure could\ncontinue to rise given the many remaining days in the year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe number of high-confidence hotspots from January to 9 August 2026\ntotals 7,578 hotspots,\u201d said Novianti Ruliana of the Weather and\nLightning Satellite Analysis and Management Working Team to Republika on\nMonday (10\/8\/2026).<\/p>\n<p>Based on the number of high-confidence hotspots from January to 9\nAugust 2026, seven provinces recorded the highest figures. West\nKalimantan led with 2,743 hotspots, followed by South Papua (662\nhotspots), Central Kalimantan (577 hotspots), Riau (573 hotspots), East\nKalimantan (406 hotspots), South Sumatra (277 hotspots) and South\nSulawesi (257 hotspots).<\/p>\n<p>BMKG explained that forest and land fires are influenced by three\nmain factors: human activity, geographical conditions and weather\nconditions. Human activity is the primary trigger, for example land\nclearing by burning. Geographical conditions, such as the\ncharacteristics of peatland, affect how easily an area catches fire and\nthe level of difficulty in extinguishing it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWeather conditions, including low rainfall, high temperatures, low\nhumidity and strong winds, play a role in increasing the potential for\nand accelerating the spread of fires that have already occurred,\u201d said\nNovianti.<\/p>\n<p>Under normal conditions, Novianti said weather acts as a supporting\nfactor rather than the main trigger. However, during severe drought\nconditions in the dry season, especially when accompanied by the El Ni\u00f1o\nphenomenon, the role of weather in supporting the spread of forest and\nland fires can increase significantly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEl Ni\u00f1o causes a significant reduction in rainfall as well as a\nlonger and drier dry season than normal, making land and vegetation more\nsusceptible to burning, and fires that occur have the potential to\nspread more quickly,\u201d said Novianti.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, Novianti stressed that weather is generally not the sole\ncause of forest and land fires, as the initial trigger remains dominated\nby human activity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, during periods influenced by El Ni\u00f1o, the contribution of\nweather factors to the extent and intensity of forest and land fires\nneeds greater attention,\u201d said Novianti.<\/p>\n<p>BMKG predicts that the 2026 dry season will arrive earlier, be drier\nand last longer than normal. The peak is expected to be dominant in\nAugust (around 48.84 percent of land area) and September (25.41\npercent), with the El Ni\u00f1o phenomenon predicted to persist until early\n2027 (moderate probability 98 percent, strong probability 62\npercent).<\/p>",
