Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has forecast light to heavy rainfall accompanied by lightning and strong winds across West Java from 17 to 22 February 2026. The agency warned residents and local authorities to remain vigilant against hydrometeorological hazards including floods, landslides and fallen trees during the dry-to-wet season transition, and issued recommendations for community-level disaster risk reduction.

Bandung (ANTARA) — The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency
(BMKG) has forecast the potential for light to heavy rainfall
accompanied by lightning and strong winds across West Java over the
coming week, from 17 to 22 February 2026.

Head of the BMKG Bandung Station, Teguh Rahayu, said the conditions
are influenced by several atmospheric dynamics phenomena, including the
ENSO index at the global scale in the Niño 3.4 region.

“Over the coming week, weather conditions are generally expected to
bring rainfall of light to heavy intensity, potentially accompanied by
lightning and strong winds during the afternoon, evening and night-time
hours,” Teguh said in Bandung on Tuesday.

He therefore urged the public, particularly those in West Java, to
remain vigilant against extreme weather conditions over the coming
week.

Teguh explained that atmospheric instability, ranging from mildly to
strongly unstable categories, also indicates the likelihood of
convective cloud growth that could trigger extreme weather events.

Based on analysis of global and local weather models together with
observational data, BMKG concluded that heavy rainfall and strong winds
could occur in short bursts across a number of areas in West Java.

Teguh said the agency had also issued several recommendations to the
public and regional governments regarding the potential for
hydrometeorological disasters such as flooding, landslides and fallen
trees.

“We urge the public to remain vigilant and to keep abreast of
official weather information from BMKG. Understand the potential hazards
in your surrounding environment and immediately take risk-reduction
measures,” he said.

Furthermore, he noted that as the transition period from the dry
season to the wet season approaches this year, residents should be wary
of extreme weather events such as heavy rain, strong winds and lightning
that may occur suddenly.

“The public is encouraged to recognise the potential hazards in their
environment and begin to understand how to reduce disaster risk — for
example, by not littering indiscriminately, working together to maintain
cleanliness and managing their surroundings,” he said.

Given these atmospheric dynamics, BMKG forecasts very heavy rainfall
accompanied by lightning and thunder through to 22 February 2026.
",
