Pekanbaru, (ANTARA) - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics\nAgency (BMKG) Pekanbaru station in Riau Province has detected 4,028\nhotspots across Sumatra, with South Sumatra contributing the highest\nnumber at 2,994 points.<\/p>\n
BMKG Pekanbaru forecaster Bella R Adelia said the figures were\nupdated data as of 4.00 pm local time (WIB) on Tuesday afternoon\n(15\/9).<\/p>\n
Besides South Sumatra, a considerable number of hotspots were also\ndetected in Jambi (319), Bangka Belitung (354), Lampung (269), Riau (40)\nand Bengkulu (32).<\/p>\n
\u201cOther regions in Sumatra with detected hotspots are West Sumatra\n(13), North Sumatra (2) and the Riau Islands (5),\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the hotspots in Riau are spread across six areas, with the\nlargest number in Indragiri Hulu Regency at 24 points, followed by\nIndragiri Hilir Regency (7), Kuantan Singingi (4), Pelalawan (3), and\nDumai City and Rokan Hilir with one each.<\/p>\n
\u201cVisibility in Pelalawan has dropped to 2.5 kilometres and in Tambang\nto around four kilometres,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n
BMKG has also detected the movement of smoke haze worsening air\nquality in Riau Province, which is being blown in from forest and land\nfires in southern Sumatra. The phenomenon is being driven by winds from\nthe south-east and south-west.<\/p>\n
\u201cBased on the wind patterns and smoke distribution imagery we are\nmonitoring, there is potential for smoke to drift in from areas to the\nsouth of Riau.
