Jakarta — Providing space for orphaned children to select their own
Eid needs is considered to have significant psychological impact. This
approach not only meets clothing requirements, but also builds
children’s confidence and self-worth ahead of Eid al-Fitr.

The programme was organised by Baitul Maal Hidayatullah (BMH) through
the Blessed Ramadan Shopping activity at Matahari Department Store
Gressmall, Gresik, on 25 February 2026. Beneficiary children were
invited to directly select clothing to wear during Eid celebrations.

This approach positions children as subjects with choices, rather
than mere aid recipients. Several social observers believe that the
direct experience of selecting items can help children learn
decision-making and experience equal treatment in public spaces.

A representative from Matahari Department Store Gressmall, Iis,
expressed pleasure at being able to participate in the programme.

Imam Muslim, Head of the Programmes and Empowerment Division at BMH
East Java, stated that the programme was organised to provide a
memorable experience for orphaned children. “We wanted to provide a
memorable experience for them. This is not simply about new clothes, but
about building happiness and confidence in orphaned children as they
welcome Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr,” he said in a press release on Sunday
(1 March 2026).

Experience-based programmes such as this demonstrate a shift in
philanthropic approaches from consumptive aid towards strengthening
psychosocial aspects. Ramadan serves as an opportunity to expand this
impact, by positioning orphaned children as individuals requiring
empowerment, not merely assistance.
",
